Yes. You can reinstall Windows 7 without sighted help, certainly from within Windows. If for whatever reason Windows won't boot then yes a reinstall will require sighted assistance (unless you're like me and remember all the keystrokes). The reason is the DVD itself does not provide speech as it boots a mini version of Windows called Windows PE, or Windows Preinstallation environment.

No. What I'm asking is if the procedure you conveyed before was performed
without the use of a virtual drive. I am trying to determine if one can install
Windows from scratch without sighted help. The instructions you gave before
implied this. Remember, I'm not asking if you can do this on a virtual machine,
I already know that. I'm asking if you can reinstall Windows 7 without sighted
help.

Hi Andre.
I have physically installed Windows 7 several times. Installing inside a
virtual machine would be like installing on a computer with a blank hard
disk with no operating system installed.

Chris, have you installed Windows 7 using the actual physical disk, or are
these the steps you use to install on a virtual machine?

What are the advantages to installing in this manner (over XP) rather than
completely wiping the drive and installing from scratch?

Hi Yvonne and all.
Here is how you do a clean install of Windows 7 inside Windows XP.
1. Insert your Windows 7 DVD.
2. Click install now.
3. Click "go online to get dynamic updates for setup." I personally
choose not to but Microsoft recommends you do for the latest hardware
drivers and security updates.
4. Accept the software license terms by checking the box. Click next.
5. Click custom (advanced).
6. Select the partition where Windows XP is installed. Click next.
7. Click ok on the next screen.
8. Shortly your system will reboot several times to complete
installation. Eventually "Set up Windows" appears. You can use Narrator
to help you complete this wizard.
Hope this helps.

Hi Yvonne.
You can use an upgrade disk to install Windows 7. However as you are
on XP you will have to do a clean install. In other words, there is no
in-place upgrade from XP to Windows 7. This goes for any version of XP
to any version of Windows 7. Also, if you wish to install Windows 7 64
bit, a clean install is required regardless of operating system
(unless that is also 64 bit) as you cannot install or run a 64 bit
program on a 32 bit operating system.
Hope this helps.
