Hi Yvonne.
If you have an external drive or separate partitions on an internal drive, then this will be all you need to back up your data, providing the partition(s) or drive(s) have enough space to fit them all of course. Backing up to CD is a good idea but not worth it because of the cost of external hard drives, which are reasonably cheap these days.

Hi Yvonne.
No. All your programs will go. They will need to be reinstalled. This
is why it's called a clean install; you are affectively replacing
Windows XP with a fresh install of Windows 7.

Hi Yvonne and all.
Here is how you do a clean install of Windows 7 inside Windows XP.
1. Insert your Windows 7 DVD.
2. Click install now.
3. Click "go online to get dynamic updates for setup." I personally
choose not to but Microsoft recommends you do for the latest hardware
drivers and security updates.
4. Accept the software license terms by checking the box. Click next.
5. Click custom (advanced).
6. Select the partition where Windows XP is installed. Click next.
7. Click ok on the next screen.
8. Shortly your system will reboot several times to complete
installation. Eventually "Set up Windows" appears. You can use
Narrator to help you complete this wizard.
Hope this helps.

Hi Yvonne.
You can use an upgrade disk to install Windows 7. However as you are
on XP you will have to do a clean install. In other words, there
is no
in-place upgrade from XP to Windows 7. This goes for any version
of XP
to any version of Windows 7. Also, if you wish to install Windows
7 64
bit, a clean install is required regardless of operating system
(unless that is also 64 bit) as you cannot install or run a 64 bit
program on a 32 bit operating system.
Hope this helps.
