I am now using similar software called Hardware Sensor. that also reports
the core temp in the System Tray. Additionally, it can be set to throttle
the CPU by cycling the voltage on and off to reduce heat. My CPU would get
up to 80 degrees Celcius if running a task for over an hour. For instance,
it would just turn off without warning during a full virus scan. It is not
a free product. I am sure this is a sign that my laptop is not well and can
not handle how hard I push it, but this utility will stretch it a little
further. Perhaps, the insides are filled with cat hair, but I have had no
luck cleaning it out or just by using a cooling pad.
P.S. I found a similar free package in Ubuntu, which I use when running
Vinux. I think it is called cputemp.

With some compatible processors, Speed Fan can adjust the fan speed when
the internal temperature gets too high.

Can either of these programs throttle the CPU if the temperature gets too
high?

It's probably also a good idea to monitor your PC's internal temperature
with an accessible free program like Core Temp or Speed Fan, which
displays the CPU temperature in the System Tray. You can't always tell
when your PC is running dangerously hot just by the sound of its fan.

Daily Tip:
Keep It Cool
Computers generate quite a bit of internal heat, especially if they are
running video or audio applications or multiple programs
simultaneously. Excess heat over prolonged periods of time can damage
components and connections, not to mention affect performance. All
computers are equipped with fans that dissipate the heat, but sometimes
they can't keep up, especially if the vents are blocked or occluded by
dirt and dust. In addition to keeping the vents clear, you can keep
your computer cool and healthy by keeping the room temperature lower
and making sure air can circulate around your computer.
