Well serves me right. I should have googled before this.
There is no advantage to defragmenting a SSD (Solid State Drive, they are
designed for even write operations and the access times are not influenced
by the exact location of data, it takes no more or less time to read or
write to any particular logical sector regardless of location.
All SSDs have a theoretical number of writes so, in theory defragmenting
means unnecessary writes which will reduce the number of total writes but
according to my research this theoretic number is not relevant to a working
computer.
So, defragmenting a solid state drive is no more harmful than erasing and
overwriting files on any solid state memory device. This regardless of the
urban legends to the contrary.

damaging the SSD or at the very least shortening its life.
No, you should not defrag such a drive. In fact, if you're using Windows 7
you should go into the disk defrag and confirm it is disabled.

O right just was told never to defrag one even with the program I use that
runs in the background to keep my discs defragged will not defrag that

Presumably
defragmenting it doesn't result in much by way of performance
improvements
but I haven't read anything on the subject.
