Andre, this will be my next move. Right now I have several files on my
thumb drive, so I have to take some of them off and just leave NVDA, for
instance.
I'll let you know what happens.
One other thing: I don't know which drive my thumb drive would be, but I'll
give it a try.

Copy and paste this path in your run dialogue:
C:\Windows\System32\Narrator.exe
try it on your computer to insure it works.
I believe this path is valid for all versions of windows from XP up to
Windows 7.
If not, run a Google search for the path to the Narrator.exe file on a
Vista
computer.
did we discuss why you don't just place a copy of window eyes or jaws on a
thumb drive and try to install a screen reader in that way?

Andre, I do have sound because I hear the Windows music when booting up.
I suspect the former user has some special way to get in.
If I could just get Narrator going, Hopefully I could find out what's
going
on.

1. You might be presented with the UAC so try pressing alt + Y.
2. Press windows applications key and type the first few characters of
the
word narrator and press enter. give it a few seconds to load.
3. Get a thumb drive and place a single MP3 file on it. Launch it by
pressing something like X:Random.mp3. This will tell you if you have
sound
coming out of your computer.
4. Go to start menu search and type run followed by enter. Now type the
word
media and press enter. Press the end key to go to the last wav file and
press enter. You should hear the sound effect play.

I tried that also, but it didn't work. Someone gave me this laptop with
vista and I have no idea if there is something preventing me from
functioning on the screen or not. It looks like I'll have to have
someone
sighted look at the screen for me and see what's going on here.
The windows music comes on and I hear the hard drive going, but that's as
far as I am able to go.

How about windows key+ letter r to get to the run dialog, and then just
type in the word narrator. Hopefully, that would work.

Is there a keystroke to start Narrator in Windows vista? I need to
have
it
running to install Jaws.
