Hi Alan,
Typically, soundcards are internal, either being chips on the motherboard,
or plugged into an internal PCI slot,
USB soundcards, as the name implies, are simply inserted into a open USB
port on the outside of the computer.
As I mentioned in an earlier post this week, they may be about the size of a
flash drive,
or a stand alone unit connected to the computer via a USB cable.
The simplest ones that plug directly into a USB port, have a jack for
speakers, and one for a microphone,
while the stand-alone units may be equipped with more connections and
features.

sound cards and suggested a Kingston or san disk so I just googled for

I don't think that Sandisk makes USB soundcards, but you can give this a
look:

You can also look at Creative Labs, maker of Soundblaster:

Some cards are about the same size of a flash drive, and others are a
stand-alone box that connects to the computer via USB cable.
In either case, keep in mind that you will need
a set of speakers for each soundcard if you are going to use them at the
same time.
