This is one reason why I use Outlook instead of Outlook Express - you can have an unread mail folder and no matter which folder your new messages are in you will always find them in that folder too.
The only other way I can think that might work is if you place all your mail for mailing lists as sub-folder to the Inbox then maybe you might, when on the inbox folder get told how many emails there are. Others with Outlook Express might like to give their input.
