I keep hearing that this is some kind of bug in Windows 7.
You might try the following.
Go to windows explorer.
Tab to organize.
Press applications key.
Go to layout submenu.
Uncheck preview pane.
That fixed my problem.

I am running Windows 7 Professional and whenever I open a folder on any of my

folder, Downloads, on my C drive, I can navigate a few files but after only a
few seconds the message, Downloads Not Responding. If I try and alt f4 out of
the folder I get a message saying,
Windows Explorer is not responding
Windows can check online for a solution. If you restart or close the program,
you might
lose information.
Check for a solution and restart the program.
Close the program.
Wait for the program to respond.
View problem details .

If I click on, check online and restart the program, it shuts down Windows
Explorer and I have to reboot.
If I click on, wait for the program to respond, I have to wait 5 minutes or so
and then I can navigate the folder, but only that folder and if I navigate to a
different folder the problem reoccurs.
When I click on, view problem details, I get this message:

I have been having this problem for several months and have tried Googleing for
a solution but haven’t found an answer yet.

Any suggestions?
