I too start out with the bags of gold, but I only open up properties that I will need and nothing more. I usually have a look at my quests and decide what I need to work on first. For example:
1. Buy 1,000 automations (that will take several restarts). 2. Sell 5,000 silver ore (I will require the mine and to unlock silver ore) 3. Sell 100,000 coal (I'll need the quarry) 4. Sell 300,000 stone (again, the quarry is necessary, unlock with the stone unlock) 5. Sell 5,000 tools (okay, I need a blacksmith, lumber yard, quarry and furnace) 6. Have 15,000 storage (this is going to take a loooooong time...) 7. Sell 5,000,000 logs(oh God! The pain! Well I'll definitely need a lumber yard) So, based off those quests, I would need to unlock all but two of the properties, but I would not need to buy very much in the way of product unlocks. That's the trick: knowing when to spend money.
