A braille book was available and could still be available from RNIB
called "The ruULES OF CHESS" by Francis Merrick if memory serves.  This
will teach you all of the legal moves for all of the pieces but does not
teach strategy.  Several other volumes on chess strategy have been
written and I learned the moves but not the strategy.  If you learn the
moves then find a chess club and play several games you may start to
learn if a third person observes and works with you after the game
finishes.
