Hi Stephen, It doesn’t effect the storyline of the game. The only real consequence is that you can’t get Wilhelm signed up as one of the guards. Don’t worry though, the quest won’t show up with Wilhelm dead, so long as you complete the other quests, you’ll be fine and the game will be complete.

You have to free the wolves and then pull the lever in the gatehouse. If you pull the lever first, you can't free the wolves and Wilhelm dies.
