Yep, I'm playing How Close is the Ghost too and having the same issue. I even tried going on the porch and pulling the time extender, but that didn't seem to help. I figure there must be something to pick up which lures the cat to you, but I haven't found it yet...
So far it's my favorite of the games I've tried. I really didn't care for Hotel of Secrets that much because the characters have ridiculous accents. I did rather enjoy the Psychotronic Mind and am still exploring how to discover more of the endings.
