You have to move left or right and jump off the rope. Just like you'd have to swing off to get onto a platform above the ground. It's one of those things that you have to keep fiddling with. I grasped how to do it intuitively somehow. It just felt natural. Once you've done it, you'll wonder how figuring it out gave you that much trouble in the first place. It's just like some puzzles in text adventures. You read the solution and have that same feeling of "why didn't I figure that out three days ago?"
