Hi richard,
Microsoft DirectX has drivers and support for just about any hardware 
device you can imagine. To program them you would use dinput8.lib and 
dinput8.h in your application.
You have to of course create objects for the devices you plan to use and 
plus supply the System GUID for the device. Once it is found by your 
initialisation function it is merely a matter of polling the device to 
see where the stick is and which buttons are being held down.
