Robert,

You are most likely in for one hell! of a party.
Unless the whole was caused by a particular event its Genesis is probably
rust. First Run your hands along the lower edges of the front fenders,
rocker panels below the doors, rear quarter panels, wheel openings and the
area adjacent to and surrounding your rear bumper and tail gate. What you
are feeling for is a rough bubbly surface, weak spots or wholes in the
metal. This means that the rust has spread throughout the body structure
and unless you want to do a "frame off restoration," your efforts will be
temporary at best and most likely turn in to a study in frustration and
expense. Next you will want to get under the truck and working out word
from the edges of the whole begin poking about with a screw driver you no
longer love, a chisel, or a long punch. This will give you an idea of how
large the rusted area is and how much material you will need to remove to
get a good clean repair.
Let me know what you find and we will continue from that point.
