You asked for more details about the Rat Zapper, so here goes.
A Rat Zapper is a plastic box about eleven inches long, five inches wide,
and four inches high. On top is a battery compartment, an off/on rocker
switch, and a L E D light. On one end is an opening about 3.5 inches wide
by 3.75 inches high, which is the entrance to an eleven inch long tunnel.
To set the Rat Zapper you flip the rocker switch to the off position and
insert four AA alkaline ultra batteries into the battery compartment. Next
you tip it on end so the opening to the tunnel is pointing up, and drop one
or two pieces of bait into the tunnel. The bait will drop to the closed end
of the tunnel. Finally, you place the zapper where there are signs of rats
or mice and flip the rocker switch to the on position.
When the zapper is turned on the L E D lights up and, I presume, a capacitor
is charged from the batteries.
When a rat or mouse comes along it will head into the tunnel to get the
bait. As it approaches the bait it will set off a sensor in the floor of
the tunnel, which causes the capacitor to discharge through metal plates in
the floor and electrocute the rodent. The intruder will not be grilled, as
there is only one quick jolt of current. The L E D will then flash until
the zapper is reset.
When you see that the light is flashing you will turn off the rocker switch
and upend the zapper to dump the dead rodent out of the tunnel. If, like
me, you are totally blind and can't see the flashing light, you can just
come by every morning, turn off the rocker switch, and upend the zapper over
the trash can to see if a dead rodent falls out.
Your set of four alkaline ultra batteries is good for about thirty days or
ten kills. I don't know if turning it off and on every morning, as I do to
dump it, shortens battery life. The bait which ships with the zapper is
just dry pet food, so you can use any cat or dog food.
I have never had rats in the house, but the zapper has been very effective
at getting rid of mice, even if they were 'trap shy' when presented with old
Victor traps. I did find stories on the internet from people who used it to
rid their houses of rats.
A few attachments are available for the Rat Zapper. One allows you to use D
batteries instead of AA batteries and get much longer battery life. Another
is a L E D on the end of a six foot cord so that you can monitor the status
if your zapper is in a location that is difficult to access. The third is a
monitoring system that lets you check the status of several zappers in
different locations.
Someone asked if the Rat Zapper posed a hazard to cats or could be used to
kill squirrels. I suppose they are fair game if they are small enough to
fit into the tunnel. One article on the internet says that it can be used
to control rats, mice, or squirrels. Just enter rat zapper into Google and
you will find more information as well as, of course, lots of places to buy
it.
No, I am not a paid representative; just a satisfied customer.
