It would work except it might damage the stereo depending on how robust the output circuit is. In the old days of output transformers there would likely be no problem at all but some of the more modern solid state outputs don't like to be surged like that, on and off.
Max might have more current knowledge about that. If you can get to a RadioShack store you can probably buy a beeper, I have one here left over from one of the kids science projects. I stuck a pair of alligator clips one on each lead, it is in a round plastic housing. One clip on a battery terminal and the other on what ever end you like then touch the other end to the free battery terminal. You have a continuity tester. I think the beeper and clips might run you five or six bucks. Might even be worth bundling all together including a battery connecter and proper leads so you can just change the battery when necessary. you could probably wrap the thing up in a wad of the handyman's secret weapon to form a more or less permanent continuity tester.
