Victor, I have never had occasion to open either of my notebook computers, I will though assume that there are plug type connectors which attach the drive and monitor and so on.
You pull the plug then you test across the points to look for power. You probably won't pick up anything from the data stream without some sort of logic detector, I don't know much about those certainly I have never heard of a blind accessible one. You should be able though to detect some signals on the motor control wires. There should be power to the back light of the screen you should be able to detect. Usually a power failure will be at the power supply. This is the component that the power cable attaches to and the wiring from the battery holder is connected to. The output from the power supply will have a couple of voltages, I think most, maybe all modern notebook computers will have about 3 volts for logic, I will guess 12 volts for powering the motors, like fans, disk drive motors, maybe the head controllers and back light. Desk tops used to use 24 volts for that sort of stuff. I am guessing the power supply will also have a 5 volt output for powering logic to things like the network connection and serial I/O like the USB ports. I would bet on a failure in the power supply. I have no idea if any of those circuits in the supply are fused but I would be very surprised to hear they are not given the value of the components they power. A failure of the drive would not disable the screen, it would not permit the computer to boot up for sure but you should see a screen and one of those unintelligible error messages. My bet is the power supply and unless you are well informed and skilled your remedy will be to replace that section of the machine. I doubt that the average tech would even attempt to repair it, at $30 per hour or more and probably more it is just not worth much time and troubleshooting. I would love to have a notebook to disassemble just to see how they do it. I bet I would be very disappointed. Best of luck.
