Hi Kevin, Screen may well be strong enough depending on the size of the area being covered .
You might want to buy some of that expanded steel, it may have other names but it is that stuff with the diamond shaped holes. They form it by stamping steel plate with small slots staggered at alternate rows then they stretch it out which gives it that characteristic diamond shaped holes. They are about half an inch by three quarters, there may be larger sizes but that should do well, small enough to stop leaves but permit lots of light and air and very much stronger than screen. Pressure treated wood will withstand rot and critters much better than painted untreated wood for sure. You could probably make a very simple rectangle of 2 by 4 and with a few fence staples just tack the expanded steel down to the frame. If you can get it galvanized I would do that, if you intend to paint it and it is galvanized I believe it is recommended that you wash it in a soda solution to neutralize any residual acid so it will take and hold paint. Hope this gives you an idea or two.
