The cheep filters it really doesn't matter, but for some of the newer furnaces they operate more efficiently with a little higher quality filter. Mine does.
The ones I buy have a material on one side, and a plastic supporting such as has already been described. They also have a crisscross of either cardboard or plastic on the same side as the plastic supports. This side goes toward the furnace fan, the air coming in will have to go through the filter first. So, there is a specific way to put them in, once you do have them in the correct way, you can remember when you change them.
