  I've used both guns and irons. A gun gives you a little more 
  opportunity to set things and then apply heat. An iron takes time to 
  heat and takes longer to cool. I guess it really comes down to what 
  type of application, but for just soldering wires together, I've 
  rapped the wires and solder together and then applied heat and the 
  results have been pretty good. You can tell of course when the solder 
  is flowing, but you aren't always sure if you've gotten the entire 
  length of wire. A gun might prove more helpful in those situations 
  where you have to solder a wire to a contact point. I've not been 
  overly successful with this operation.
  All of these observations are just from my experience. Good luck with 
  your soldering project.
