Max, I have a Freud fixed base router with a table.  I haven't done 
any hand routing, yet, but instead, used a table.  If I understand 
the instructions right, when hand routing, the router moves from left 
to right.  When using a table, move the wood from right to left.  As 
you probably already know, this has to do with the direction the 
router bit spins.  I have better luck routing with the grain.  Going 
against the grain can tear and chip the wood, a bit.  I don't know 
how one knows what speed to use.  I think if the bit turns too fast, 
the wood can burn.  I have forgotten what happens if the bit turns too slowly.
