If you have a piece that is finished on both sides such as pre fab shelving
then you would need to take note of which side is ruffed up when you go to
use the board or hit the ruffed up side with a fine file.

Also, when cutting with a circular saw, place the finished side of the
material down.
When cutting with a table saw, the finished side should be up.
In either case, a plywood, or fine tooth blade is desireable to reduce
splintering.
