I have an old maytag and on that dryer the rollers are actually in the back
of the drum. I could not figure out how the darned thing came apart since
the back and sides were all one molded piece. So I went and got another used
one to replace the old maytag. It is sitting out in the old shed waiting me
to dig into it and figure out if I can fix it so I can resell it.

Hi bill,

I to reckon it is likely to be a bad roller. Many dryers don't use them any
more but probably some still do.

There is nothing more than a bronze sleeve bearing in the middle of a rubber
roller around a bolt. For any number of reasons these can wear out so the
roller becomes sloppy or it might rub and form a flat surface but either way
you will get a clumping noise usually with every revolution of that roller.

In my limited experience there are two rollers which support the front of
the drum, at about the four thirty position and the 7 thirty position.

To see them and repair them you have to remove the front of the dryer. It is
a very long time since I have done this but there are a couple of
considerations, one is the button which turns off the machine when the door
is open.

There is something of a frame behind the front panel with the bolts and
rollers mounted to it. The front edge of the drum rests on these the rear of
the drum has a post which spins through a bearing behind the drum and in the
middle of the shield which supports the elements. The one I repaired had a
plastic bearing so be careful if you remove the drum, this looked to me like
it might be easily damaged.

You can buy generic kits which are glides. These are a sort of domed shaped
band of fairly thick material probably Teflon over a sort of felt all
mounted onto a steel piece. You will have to drill some holes in the frame
and mount the glides to support the front of the machine to support the
front of the drum and it will run more quietly than it ever did.

You may be able to buy the replacement rollers too, when I did it I didn't
bother to wait, I was keeping the old thing running to save up for a new one
early into my private clinic days.

Hope this helps. Rae may be able to find a Web description with possibly
links to suppliers.
