Another thing to do is compare the gas usage coming from the main pipe into the
house. My mother-in-law kept having these huge utility bills and telling us
that the utilities in her town were just very high. There was a faint gas
smell that I was the only one who seemed to notice. I had the city guys out
and they checked things out in the house and found no leek. This just did not
seem right to me.

So, ironically in light of my question earlier this week, my husband stuck a
shovel in the ground of her back yard in early June and about six inches down
hit the gas pipe. We cut the gas off at the meter and started trying to find a
plumber. The guy came out and fixed the hole and discovered that we had gas
coming into the house. He checked all the appliances and pipe lines. He ended
up under the house where he found the leek inside a wall. Her gas bill went
way down, and her health started to improve.

This is a true story, honest to God. This is even the short version that does
not include the struggles of finding a plumber that would come to her small
town. One guy actually laughed when I asked it they came over there. I
finally found this almost ninety year old retired plumber to come out. There
was no hurry to his work, but he did a thorough job. All this said though, and
I still like gas heat and appliances.
