Lee, I have a linksys wireless router and it does fine. Sometimes the problem is just antenna positioning. Other times, some old houses with all that metal lath really play havoc on a wireless system.
Some routers can be modded a bit to boost their output power but it would depend on make and model on just how you would do this. You can get a bridge to extend your range, or, put a long cable on the router and stick it to the ceiling in the stairway.
