Hi Tom,
Looking around the inverters have come a long way since I had an old
Lafayette inverter. On the site
http://www.topsalesdepot.com/poinwinchfu.html they have inverters that have
an output 2200, 3,000 and 5,000 output. They give a fantastic description of
the units except that don't state how long a 12v deep cycle battery would
last. The old inverter that I had had a 300W output and would kill a battery
in about 4 hours just powering a 75W light bulb. I have no idea what the
efficiency rating was but probably not very good. On the input side it had a
30A fuse and it had one very large transformer. I originally pade close to
$200 for that unit. That was in the early 1970s. Years later I sold it at a
yard sale for about $20.

spiro,
they're called inverters for weird historical reasons. They turn
12 volts D.C. into 120 volts A.C. Some come as complete packages
with battery and charger built in.

You have to consider the actual power required by your intended
load device, if it's electronics will probably wor fine.

Some less expensive inverters don't produce clean enough A.C.
wave forms to work well with devices that contain transformers,
as often you get what you pay for.

You don't want to use inverters with anything that needs lots of
power I.E. heaters or appliances that produce heat etc. or heavy
power tools.
