Hi Lenny, yes inverters have come a very long ways since then. The development of very efficient power switching transistors and of high frequency switching techniques that allow use of vmuch smaller transformers make them much smaller and much more efficient than in those bad old days.
You still have to carefully consider how much power you're really drawing including the efficiency of the inverter. seventy five watts times probably 50 percent efficiency back then and you're taking a hundred fifty watts at twelve volts, that's maybe 13 amps.
