Is there a fill cap directly on top of the tanks? If so, make up a stick a bit longer than the depth of the tank with a small float like a pingpong ball on its bottom. Then open the fill cap and extend the stick down into the tank till the float hits the oil and you feel the resistance. You might need help marking the stick to coordinate witht the gauge but that should do it. If the fill cap is up on ground level, I'll have to puzzle about that a bit.
