Well it seems like a lot of money to shove some brushes and rattle chains in
metal duct, but over the years a lot of junk and dirt can accumulate in them.
If allergys are involved some insurance companies have been known to pay for
it. About three years ago I was involved in this for our church parsonage.
Prices varied from four to over six hundred dollars then in mid Missouri.
None of the tools was fancy except the very powerful truck mounted gas driven
vacuum unit. they figured the pricing by how many duct openings there were.
Also additional for cutting a access hole in the main crawl space plenum. Took
about all day with one to two people off and on. I would be worried if
flexible duct or duct board is in the house. The vinyl lining of flex duct
gets very brittle over age and I would think their tools could damage it easy.
The duct board with compressed fiberglas insulation could also sufffer.

  Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Air Duct Cleaning

  Hi folks,

Recently I had occasion to remove a couple of floor mounted heat registers
and found that the air ducts were getting a bit nasty.
What do we know about air duct cleaning? My first reaction was that is some
kind of a scam and then my Mom had it done and she claimed that she was
breathing better. Is this one of those projects where I can buy the tools
and do it myself or is it better left to the guy with all of the wazoo
  equipment.
Let me know what youall think.
