I don't know about the cost, I do intend to have someone come in and renew the floors here on the ground floor. Interesting how taste and style change over the years, people got tired of polishing the old wood floors I guess, these days with the new Poly finishes it is enough usually just to vacuum and the occasional damp wash. ----- Original Message ----- From: aadorno1 To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, July 06, 2008 8:04 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] wood floor repare. thanks I didn't think about the equipment part. maybe I will get some one to do it for me, what does a job like that usually cost? thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: Dale Leavens To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, July 06, 2008 7:58 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] wood floor repare. Assuming the floor is something like hardwood and of good enough quality, 3/4ths thick it can usually be recovered. It takes pretty good equipment and a little skill though and unless you can see well enough to assure a series of good even coats of the appropriate finish your results may not be all that attractive. If there are no stains and no significant holes to be patched the job might not be all that difficult. Holes created when tackless was put down to hold the carpet aren't big but the putty needs to be matched. The original varnish might be in pretty good condition in which case you need only clean it very thoroughly then buff it with something like a large pad sander on a flat screen before cleaning again very thoroughly and beginning the process of applying one or two cover layers of a suitable tough Poly or varnish finish. These must be sanded a little between coats and have all possible dust fully removed between coats but if you can see well enough to get the varnish fully and levelly laid down then the job is a D Y I. If the finish needs to be fully removed then it is into drum and belt sanders and great care not to run into the walls or leave the drum running even for a moment while still. The equipment can be rented though and loads of people do it on their own. The thing is though you have to grind off the surface, may have to fill cracks and holes before applying the layers of floor finish. Just moving that rental equipment about I find to be prohibitive, not so bad if you have your own truck and you can drive it to and from the rental agency. ----- Original Message ----- From: aadorno1 To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, July 06, 2008 1:12 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] wood floor repare. hi list.
