I am getting ready to make a small gate for the top of my porch steps. Twice Micah, my guide dog, ran out of the house and down the steps then into the street. He had to relieve and I usually take him out front. So the door was opened and he had to go. He only went out a few feet and it is not a busy street but the"ounce of prevention" metaphor make sense. Anyway in planning this gate project I want to mount a 2"x2" post for the hinge side. To secure the bottom I decided to use a "dowel screw". I never knew that was the name for that particular screw. I called the local lumber supplier to get prices of the materials that I will need. I told him that I want the type of screw that is similar to a lag screw only with pointed ends on both sides. I told him that I don't know what it is called. The guy told me that they sell them and he has no idea what it is called. He went to look and gave me the correct name. I never would have guessed it. Thinking about it's purpose that is exactly what it should be called. I also am considering using an earth magnet for the latch with self closing hinges. That way anyone coming up the steps caring packages just has to bump the gate and it will open. With the self closing hinges it will become automatic closing and locking. The top of the hinge post will be bolted to the railing. This gate will be about 26"high and 38" wide.
