Tom, I will try and find out this evening when I go for some parts. The carriage bolt won't work I can't go all the way through the shared railing. I want to see if there is any stainless or heavy aluminum L brackets. One on each side of the top would really secure it. There will not be a lot of weight on the post. As for as Micah opening the gate he is never left out there alone. As a matter of fact he is a Velcro dog. I am never out of his sight unless he really has to go. If I am on the porch he will not go down to see anyone or any animal. Only when he gets that urge. I think the magnets will keep the gate from banging in the wind. initially the hinges will be strong enough for that but they will weaken. Thanks for that about dowell screws, now if I could find out what you call a screw with a lag bolt on one end and a machine bolt on the other I'd be happy. I suppose your dog won't learn to just pull the gate towards himself and get out? but I'd keep pretty close track of him till you're sure. I know with some farm animals, great elaboration has to be taken with gate latches to keep them from learning how to work them. I'd use carrige bolts going from the gate hinge post to the rail, not lag screws as the pull on them will be in tension which is the weak direction for lag bolts.
