My brother had a similar issue about two years ago. The first repair person who came out said it was his compressor, and like Larry, told my brother it would just be better to purchase a new unit.
My brother didn't like the sound of that, so he called a second repair person in. That guy told him what Donnie's repair person said, it was a bad capacitor and replaced it for something like sixty bucks, I really don't remember the cost, but needless to say, it was a hell of a lot less than a new unit. -- Blue skies.
