My brother had a similar issue about two years ago.  The first repair 
person who came out said it was his compressor, and like Larry, told my 
brother it would just be better to purchase a new unit.

My brother didn't like the sound of that, so he called a second repair 
person in.  That guy told him what Donnie's repair person said, it was a 
bad capacitor and replaced it for something like sixty bucks, I really 
don't remember the cost, but needless to say, it was a hell of a lot less 
than a new unit.
