I come up with about  the same calculations of 8.5 inches, but if you are 
not using some form of weights to exercise the upper body, you are missing 
out on a important area of the body. I use dumbbells for this purpose, every 
since my general practitioner pointed this out to me about four years ago. 
Seeing I do have some back problems in the way of the arthritis brothers I 
use two forms of exercise. one is  while standing and the other is laying 
flat on my back with my knees bent, so my feet are flat on the floor. I 
started out with a set of 3 pounders and worked myself up to 12 pounders, 
and the back has improved greatly.
