To drill through glass you need a diamond tip drill bit or a diamond bur for 
the Dremel tool.  I think plastic is a safe way to go.  Besides plastic 
won't break.

The only thing extra you need to do is to seal the ends with something water 
proof so water won't soak in and not have a way out.

I know there is a type of wax you can cram around the opening and that will 
seal it but I don't have the name off hand.  You can also use some form of 
silicone sealer whether it is caulk or the type we use on cars.  One or the 
other should seal the jar and you'll be fine.
