Certainly could.

There needs to be enough room for air to circulate through the clothing
otherwise the machine and the contents can certainly burn.

Do you make certain too that the lint trap is empty before starting each load?
This will restrict the air flow and allow things to get too hot.

The wonder is that the element didn't burn out or the place catch fire. This is
a very dangerous situation.

  Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Dryer?

  Hi,

When will a dryer burn clothes or other fabrics?
The other half put two comforters in the machine, which is definitely too
much, and the dryer scorched one of them and caused it to tear. Now, the
stuffing's all hanging out, so it looks like I will have to replace two
  comforters.

Would overloading the machine possibly cause this?
  Thanks.

  Claudia
