I cut a Vee into a piece of three quarter inch wood and hold my screw or Drill bit into the Vee to hold it straight.

I stand that up next to the spot where I want to drill, then just line up the drill bit with the edge of the block. Once you get the drill going, you can slide the block out of the way.
