Hi Bob,

The portable units are designed with a hose which can be pushed out through a
hole in a wall or into a template fitted into a window much as a drier vent
works. I believe this is the sort this fellow is talking about. Some even have
bucketless water evaporation. Not sure how they work, I presume the water may
be splashed over the heating coils where a lot of it evaporates and gets
exhausted with the heat but I haven't really seen one of those units so I am
just making that part up.

I suspect there will be some loss of eficiency if the heat exhaust hose is
extended very much because of the added resistance. Less air will exhaust and
the unit won't cool as effectively. One presumes they are sufficiently heat
protected to prevent the unit from failing should that happen.

The manufacturere probably has specifications on maximum vent length.

Dale Leavens.

A window unit doesn't have an exhaust hose to start with. You won't hurt the
unit by placing it inside a room, you just won't gain anything from it being
there.

In order to exhaust the air from a window unit, you would have to fabricate
some sort of duct that could reach the window, and be able to carry the heated
air from the condenser as well as the condensation that will otherwise spill
out on the floor.

  hello list,
I am thinking about getting an air conditioner unit for one of my rooms,
where a lot of my electronic gear is, but they all seem to come with not a lot
of exhaust hose.
unfortunately, because I don't have a lot of space here, it is very much a
case of things have to go where ever there is room for them. so I will need to
add about an extra 4 or 5 possibly even 6 meters to the exhaust hose, in order
to get it to a window, that it can then go out of. but I don't know if doing
this is ok, or if it would be likely to damage the air conditioner.
