Hi Julio,
Ham radio can be quite simple, a walkieTalkie on a local repeater with groups
of folks to chat with, or full blown huge expensive stations with
big antennas towers, computers and more.

Best place to start is with the folks at HandiHams who have manuals on
accessible
media, courses at all levels and more
http://www.handiham.org

With the elimination of the morse code requirement for licenses, it
takes only a bit of understanding of radio, not much, and some rules
and regulations along with some basic operating skills to get started.

How far you go from there is up to you. TThere is so much
variety of ways of using ham radio, it can be a bit overwhelming
along with all the jargon to get used too. But you can start simple
and meet lots of great folks, contribute to emergency communications
in your area and have a blast too.

Remember the real reason for ham radio is to provide emergency
communications when, not if, other methods fail in disasters etc.

You just gotta be there and have some idea what you can do and how.

It works!

the major U.S. association for amateur radio is
the American Radio Relay league
http://www.arrl.org
and they too have getting started stuff, although handihams is better at
accessibility.
