A certified pipe fitter friend who set up some of my air connections gave 
some great advice. First he likes the pipe dope rated for gas in addition 
to the  teflon tape. Also this is the most important part. Keep the paste 
and or teflon at least two or three threads back from the end. If right at 
the end when putting on the fitting a small piece can be broken off and it 
will end up in your air tool. He also first used an air nozzle the first 
time just in case something was in the pipe or air hose. He was taught that 
trick when he worked as a pipe fitter in one of the nuclear power plants.

I agree totally.  Just use teflon tape to seal the threads.  You can get the 
black pipe in 1/2" increments; so, no need to cut and
thread anymore.
