I've missed some of the posts on this thread, sorry if I am repeating a point
about the click rule.  Anyway, here goes.

I have a click rule and the difference,to me, is, one can actually "measure"
with it.  Each section is one foot. and each thread is 1/16 th of an inch.  So,
if you have a pipe or a board that you need to know the exact length, you feel
and set the sections and then, finish out the inches by adjusting the threads
and then counting them.

Takes practice as in all things, but it works.  I don't use it much but still
marvel at the mind of the inventer!  Like you, Tom, one day, someone needed a
device that could measure and replacate measurements.

Paint the measuring device yellow and call it a "DeWalt", black and call it
"Black & Decker", even gray and call it a "Rigid", or red and call it a
"Milwaukie"! <grin>

Happy building and repairs to all!  Time to check the sleigh, you know!

yes on both scores.
The click rule uses threaded bar stock ground flat and the remaining
thread and a spring loaded ball bearing on a nut allows the setting.
Yours is good and quick and home made and all one needs for transfering
measure.
