Good morning Dan,
     Don't worry about picturing it wrong, anyone can do that easily.  There 
are many ways to do wiring and many equal in certain respects.
     One thing you need to remember is that code should state a limit of 7 
items per run on a ckt.  That can include one switch and six light fixtures or 
three switches operating four lights, whatever.  Ckts with recepticles is the 
same even if lights are on that ckt.
     Using a j-box to run the power line to first and than branching off to 
whatever runs are needed.  There again a standard box has a limit of five 
paired cables if running romex, standard insulated wire.  Different box sizes 
have different numbers.
     It is hard to try and cram more wires into a box than listed, but if you 
do you know since you really have to work at getting them all in with a cover 
on.
