      Vaccinations: friend or foe?
http://www.themercury.co.za/index.php?fSectionId=284&fArticleId=3250813
    By Tony Carnie

Vaccinations have saved millions of people around the world from death, illness
or crippling diseases. But have they also maimed the brains of countless
children?

Is the steady rise in autism, attention deficit disorder (ADD) and other brain
disorders linked to the tiny drops of toxic mercury which have been injected
into the bloodstreams of millions of infants during government vaccination
campaigns?

Since the 1930s ethyl mercury has been added to a variety of vaccines as a
preservative, in the form of Thimerosal.

Although mercury is a powerful brain poison, the use of Thimerosal was
justified on the basis that it preserved vaccines from bacterial contamination
and because only tiny, harmless traces of this poison would enter human blood
and brains.

Nevertheless, concern has been mounting in the United States and other nations
that Thimerosal is largely, or at least partly, responsible for the steady
increase in a wide range of neurodevelopmental (brain-related) sicknesses -
including autism, stammering, tics, sleeping and eating disorders, attention
deficit disorder, speech and language disorders, seizures and co-ordination
problems.

Barbara Fisher, co-founder of the National Vaccine Information Centre, a United
States public education group set up by the parents of vaccine-injured
children, has warned of a widespread erosion of public trust in the American
health profession and mass vaccination programmes.

"More and more parents are reporting that their healthy children are regressing
into autism after vaccination, and there are nearly 5 000 autism vaccine injury
cases pending in the US Court of Claims," Fisher told a National Academy of
Sciences hearing in 2004.

Coincidentally, she said, a government health agency had quickly assembled a
committee to hide and restrict access to official vaccine injury databases.

"Many parents of vaccine-injured children don't think it's a coincidence, just
like they don't think it's a coincidence when a healthy child goes in for
vaccinations and then regresses physically, mentally and emotionally and
becomes a totally different child."

Seizures

Despite mounting evidence of serious harm, the official message that was sent
to the media and the public was to "keep on vaccinating", even if their
children had experienced seizures during earlier vaccinations.

"(But) if you keep on vaccinating in the face of seizures you have a very good
chance of ending up with a severely brain-damaged child who drools and
twitches, and can't learn to read and write or go to the bathroom without help
or grow up to drive a car and go to college and get a job and be a productive
member of society," declared Fisher, whose son is described as vaccine-injured.

Some of the first red flags were raised in the early 1980s, when the US Food
and Drug Administration was asked to phase out Thimerosal from all
over-the-counter medical products.

But the main controversy erupted in 1999 when the US Public Health Service and
the American Academy of Paediatrics issued a joint statement calling for the
removal of all Thimerosal vaccines "as soon as possible" after studies which
showed that some children were receiving as much as 200 microgrammes of mercury
during the first six months of their lives - a level which exceeded safety
guidelines set by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Since then, battle lines have been drawn between experts who defend the use of
this preservative, and those who fear that government medical agencies and the
pharmaceutical industry have conspired to conceal the real dangers of
Thimerosal out of fear that they will be sued by the parents of brain- damaged
children around the world.

The World Health Organisation issued a statement in 1999 supporting the
development of new Thimerosal-free vaccines, but continues to argue that its
risks are "small" and theoretical.

Major vaccine-making companies began to remove Thimerosal from childhood
vaccines soon afterwards, yet it is still used in many parts of the world in
vaccines for flu and other sickness.

The watershed year of 1999 also marked the birth of the so-called "Brighton
Collaboration", a body of public and private medical experts which assumed the
role of spreading "high quality information about the safety of human vaccines".

Remarkably, one of the co-founders of this quasi-government, quasi-private body
was Elisabeth Loupi from the French vaccine and pharmaceutical company Aventis
Pasteur.

The collaboration also declared its willingness to accept funding from
pharmaceutical industries and to allow industry scientists to sit on its expert
working groups and committees.

This enraged several groups, including Congressman Dave Weldon, who argued that
the collaboration merged the regulators and regulated into an indistinguishable
group.

Weldon said it was unacceptable that vaccine manufacturers would chair or sit
on the panels which adjudicated vaccine safety issues.

He was also scathing about the role of Centres for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), which oversees the US government's vaccination and
immunisation programmes.

"I want to make it clear that I support vaccinations. My 5-year-old son has had
all of his vaccinations. However, I also believe it is appropriate to
acknowledge that, like with any medical intervention, different individuals
respond differently. We are all unique, we all have a different genetic makeup,
and what may cause no harm in one individual just might be harmful in another."

Testifying

Lynn Redwood, the mother of an autistic child and President of the Coalition of
Safeminds organisation, has also spoken out strongly against the response of
American government agencies on the Thimerosal issue.

Testifying before a US House of Representatives committee in 2004, Redwood
recalled that it had been several years since the first official calls had been
made for Thimerosal to be removed from vaccines.

"We could not have imagined that in 2004 Thimerosal would still be in vaccines
and that the government agencies tasked with protecting the public would have
failed to take aggressive action to get the mercury out and to protect our
nation's children," she said.

"We could not have imagined that they would, instead, have focused their
energies on avoiding or hiding the truth that is before them, and in so doing
undercut the public's trust while continuing to put babies at risk."

She said the Food and Drug Administration had repeatedly failed to ask tough
questions about Thimerosal or to require proof of safety while allowing its
increased use in vaccines.

The agency had been "asleep at the switch" and seemed to have abdicated its
responsibility to the public.

"I and many of my medical colleagues remain astonished that we even have to ask
the FDA to stop allowing mercury to be injected into our babies," she said. "We
have trusted that the FDA was doing its job . . . (but) that trust has been
proven undeserved in this case."

The CDC had been even more egregious, she claimed.

"At every turn, when the CDC could have alerted the public and taken a strong
stand against the use of Thimerosal, they have chosen instead to promote flawed
epidemiology studies as proof that no evidence of harm existed."

If the uninformed public accepted at face value the statements of the CDC
website, they would conclude that Thimerosal had been rigorously tested and
that it posed few risks.

"Nothing could be further from the truth," Redwood argued.

More recently, a study by father and son medical researchers David and Mark
Geier has suggested a clear correlation between a drop in autism rates in the
United States and the gradual phasing out of Thimerosal from childhood
vaccines, which began in 1999.

A spokesman for the national Health Department said yesterday he was not in a
position to respond immediately to a list of questions about the use and
regulation of Thimerosal in South Africa.

The department said it hoped to compile responses to the questions by Friday.

I am also not regular, except I have a constant and live urge to do something

I still believe that we have to acquire organizational skills (organizing
developments and seeing it through various stages) I remember one management
slogan that if you do not develop the skills required to hold a higher
position, you will not get the promotion to the next level; I hope, why our
politicians fail is they do not have the skill and courage to hold offices of
leaderships in political arena. For us to get such skills we have to develop
them by applying ourselves; our leaders shall evolve from a common platform,
atleast a major part of us. The way congress was working for independence or
the way Dravidian parties of Tamilnadu was working for few social cause, before
they could set their eyes on power. We have to create our brand image of
social service and good governance. The recent news in Dailies about LP (BUM's
political face) was not pleasant. We have to graduate. Hope, we will do it in a
short time.

  With warm regards,

From: purushothaman pillai

  Dear All,

my views on reservation need not be different from others:

I could become an engineer because of reservations and support as I am just
as ordinary as anybody; few people expect extra-ordinary from me as I once
studied in IISc. We shall also consider that I was only last but one in the
class at IISc, but a special student for some other reasons.

But, on one count we could not lose good talents who are from upper castes,
why should we lose them if they are going to help the poor people in rural
places. People from rural places very well know that upper caste people hold
very high esteem in schools as teachers; not all upper caste people are
greedy..

I had a distinction having lived with upper caste people in gurukul for four
years; we did not have much differentiation; we mingled together freely;

we also know cases where deserving candidates miss the bus because of upper
castes; one is my closest friend from my own village, who only got me the
engineering application form, if not for him I would have not at all applied
for engineering; but, he could not get the admission, although his scores were
high...

I think the reservation policy must be such that everyone gets the right to
pursue his line of choice, scrap all educational college attendance
requirements, even for PhD(for which I am now suffering); develop such national
24 hours labs, online and physical for every specialty and remove the
discrepancy at the root level itself, at basic level itself. Bring the backward
children to the level of upper caste children before they leave the primary
schools! The opportunity cost of not giving the right choice of education to
each child of this country would be more costlier.

I should also mention this: we (myself- backward and few friends from upper
castes) respect each other for our respective intellegnece and capabilities,
each had our own strengths and weakness. By the age of 12 to 14 we should have
the courage that we can live happily in this world, why should one worry about
not getting a job, a job is always there for one to grab.

We should also consider the aspect that every IIM and IIT person wishing to
become a Bill_Gates or so. Although, I could not make it even to 10% of my
dream to have a break-through, although I could enter IISc, as a boy I wanted
to become one like Sir C V Raman.

I declare that all corrupt money in this country should be recovered and
applied for education. Education shall lead to self-development, confidence,
courage to achieve goods for our nation and to the societies.

  Puru

Hello Sir,

Sorry sir, but there are always two types of persons in every era. One
like Guru Nanak and other like Guru Gobind Singh. Both of them were men
of god but their was a slightest difference between their ideologies.
Job of one starts when job of other ends. Its nice that some people
still believe that such reforms can still bring changes.
But do you think that people like these corrupt politicians will
enable you to reach your goals?
What i think India is like gold. And it needs to be burnt for
purification.

Rest i'm a very young person and i need to learn a lot from life,
but to me at this time, this appear to be the only solution.

Hi All,

I think, now, reservation should be removed becasue it is only widening the
gap between two societies and the most importantly it is stopping brilliant
students from getting good education which is thier right. Moreover,
reservation is also there in promotions which resulted in promotion on the
basis of castes instead of one's ability and competency. This is in turn
against the constitutional right of every one which guarantees every one to
enjoy same rights, opportunities in India.

So, in my opinion if politicians really want to help the poor and backward
class they should provide them money and other facilities to do their
studies. Then, everyone will be having similar chance to get the education
and the job.

Yeah, I do support this notion.

We can't say this a secular society until our constitution needs the
second\sur name of a person. It means distinction is being made on the
basis of second\sur name of a person between citizens of India. Its
like dividing India with virtual boundaries. We don't need partitioned
India, we need one India.
But on the other part as the speed of herd depends on it's slowest
element same as for the country. Progress of the country depends on
it's least progressed man. But, reservation on the basis of
caste\religion isn't the right way to improve that. It's the only way
to make vote bank.
If the reservation was made on the basis of a person's financial factor
it may be better. And the consequences associated with it are same as
that of reservation made on the basis of caste\religion.
So, i would say please do understand what is the real desire of these
corrupt politicians and do vote against reservation.

Help India to become really secular country.

Kindly meditate on the core, the entire knowledge of Shaiva Agamas. The
total sum up:

1) Param Shiva (Ultimate Reality);

2) Anugarh (Descend of Divine Grace).

3) All knowledge ends here, there is no third word.

Now what is self - realization?

As per Abhinavagupta, recognition is realization - individual "I" is part of
"Supreme I". Infact nothing has to be realized. Therefore, we focus on the
reconition or discovery of yourself as one with the Param Shiva.

This awareness or realization comes through Trika Yoga.

The task:
We were assigned the task of manning 4 different booths under the
Panchavati area, as there was an acute shortage of manpower. We managed to
give drops to more than 650 children in our booths. All of us were at the
assigned booths at 8 am, and almost all of us were there throughout the day
till 5pm when the booths closed. Special mention must be made of abhilasha
and purva who managed a booth in the absence of even a single health worker.
Yashpal, along with Tushar did a great job of coordinating with the health
authorities. The rest of the members also did a great job, especially at a
time when there was a shortage of health workers due to the marriage season.
It was really great that 12 people turned up, when we were actually
expecting only 4 people (according to the minutes of the last meeting).
Thus, this became a major chapter activity with most active members
participating.

We have unanimously decided (along with CPT ) that we will have media
coverage of this activity. So we will be using our links in the newspapers
to highlight this activity of ours along with the phone nos. of a few
members for propagation purpose.
2. Report - Polio Drive 21st May'06 : PUNE CHAPTER

Hi,

Wonderful job again !!.
Volunteers have set an example yet again by making
this activity a huge success. Hats-off for their
efforts .They have added another feather in
BM'cap. They made this activity look very easy. This
activity looks fairly simple on paper but in reality
it is a tough job because people were not aware about
the polio the drive, many don't go to the booth also,
this is not in the case of remote places but also in
areas where there are polio booths which are setup and
have an awareness campaign also.

Following is the list of volunteers how carried this
activity.

Team A

1.Priyanka Mehta
2.Santosh Kolte
3.Punit Shiknis
4.Mangesh Edke
5.Prafulla Mankar
6.Balaji C
7.Vihang Sapale
8.Rohan Rasane

Team B

  9. Manoj Tiwari
10. Prashant Nandi
11. Pankaj Arora
12. Amol Deep
13. Satya V
14. Akshay Sangekar
15. Chetan Pawar
16. Prashant Kagawade
17. Pratik Khadloya
18. Abhijeet Rajwade

Volunteers assembled at City Pride,Satara
Road, at 7.30 am.

Dr Dighe (Government Medical Officer) provided Polio
Vaccines and Vaccine Carrier. The objective of the
Polio Drive was the same as the drive which was done
on 9th April .It was to cover houses of laborers,
wagers, Construction sites, migrants, Street Hawkers
community etc. which remain uncovered due to lack of
records on the local government database. Volunteers
were grouped in two teams to carry this activity.
We were a bit anxious at the start because we thought
no one would entertain us, this proved to be wrong as
people living in these remote areas gave us full
support in what we were doing.

This was the first time our team wore the BM T-shirt
for the purpose of propagation.

The areas of Pune that were covered are
1. Mitra Mandal Canal side slums
2. Treasure park and the nearby area,Sahakarnagar
3. Walawekar Nagar and nearby area
4. Panchawati Construction,
5. Ambedkar Vasahat
6. Padmavati Nagar remote areas
7. Katraj Slums
8. KK Market Canal Slums
9. Lake town Construction and near by construction
site
10. Wonder City Area Ambegaon

The total number of children vaccinated by our
volunteers is 472!!(This amount is a huge amount
considering the areas which were covered.)

Thanks a lot volunteers for carrying out this activity
with excellence.

This activity was a grand Success, and I hope that we
succeed similarly in all the activities we carry out.

What we learned from this activity:-
People come ahead if we are doing any social activity.

Other areas which need attention :
While we were vaccinating the children we have found
out that the children in the construction need some
special attention, may it be health wise(many children
seemed to have some kind of infection ) ,economic
support by education and also financial support.

Regards
Rohan

5. *Reservations* issue
A few individuals from Bhumi will be participating in the Anti-Reservations
Rally from Indira Park.
We had discussions about our stand on this issue.
We've decided to:
1. Start a fund for supporting educational initiatives and support schools
for the underprivileged. In this regard, we are going to be proactive
instead of taking to the streets.
2. School Enrollment Drives in backward areas. We will have awareness drives
and motivate children to join School.
Both these initiatives ensure that Bhumi is NOT portrayed as being against
the underprivileged which may happen if we participate in the
anit-Reservation protests(even though most protests are against Reservations
in it's current form, the message is usually lost) and we will be actively
helping the people for whom these reservations were conceptualized in the
first place.

For more details regarding our stand on Reservations, contact
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

6. *Propagation*
Many members feel that we have not been concentrating on propagating Bhumi
actively in colleges etc. We will begin our Propagation & Career Counselling
Drives from June 19th. We require members who can devote 3 hours a day(on

interested.

Hi,
Students from the so called 'Forward castes' could get only 28 of the 1224
MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu in 2005! In my batch at Madurai Medical College
there was only one guy from the FC in the whole batch of 156 that entered in
1999.

So who exactly needs a reservation? I think a discussion about this is
flooding the mail boxes of people. I've written something on my blog...
please leave your comments with your email ID (like this Prahalathan AT
hotmail DOT com) if you want me to get back to you. I'll respond ASAP. I'll
reply to all your comments on the blog at night so you can come back for my
reply if necessary.

BTW I'm one of the moderators of Chennai Chapter. I joined this group only
recently.

Regards,
Prahalathan.
