As per the enclosed report, not only Bt Cotton, Bt Brinjal, Soyabean oil, GM
drugs too have been allowed for clinical trials. I am forced to ask, how can we
explain this madness? The whole of EU and many other countries including Brazil
and Japan have expressed grave concerns over GM produce. America too is divided
on the issue with protests from concerned citizen. What has our government done
to educate the public over GM food dangers? Why are we stepping in where the
angels fear to tread?

WHY IS THE INDIAN PRESS AND MEDIA SILENT ON THIS ISSUE?

  Horrified at the developments,
  Jagannath.

Despite all the suffering and suicides it has already inflicted via GM
crops, India's GM regulatory body - the GEAC - has just approved the
commercial release of 36 more varieties of transgenic Bt cotton and it is
also considering approving Br brinjals!

Details of all their decisions in their press release below.

GEAC APPROVES PROPOSALS

17:48 IST
The GEAC in the Ministry of Environment & Forests has approved the
following proposals:

A. Import of GM Soybean oil.

...On an interim basis the GEAC approved the import of refined soybean
oil subject to certification from the country of export that it has
been derived from Roundup Ready Soybeans. In case of crude degummed
soybean oil, in addition to the certification, regarding it having been
derived from Round up Ready Soyabean, the importer is also required to
submit the analytical report from either CFTRI/NIN/Shri Ram Laboratories on
the composition of crude-degummed Soybean oil both pre and post
processing stage before a final view is taken. The test results should also
include the pre and post refining levels of glyphosate in the oil as well
as in the residue. The GEAC clearance does not exempt the importers
from the requirements under PFA.

B. Commercial Release of transgenic Crops:

The GEAC has approved commercial release of Bt Cotton hybrids in the
North, Central and South zones as follows:

a. North Zone : 8 hybrids

b. Central Zone : 12 hybrids

c. South zone : 16 hybrids

In addition to Bt hybrids containing the Cry 1 Ac gene (MON 531 event),
which was earlier approved by the GEAC and is in commercial cultivation
since 2002. the GEAC approved hybrids with three new gene/event namely
Bt hybrids expressing encoding fusion genes (cry 1Ab+Cry Ac) 'GFM
developed by M/s Nath Seeds, Bt hybrids expressing cry 1Ac gene (Event-1)
by M/s JK Seeds Ltd and Bt hybrids expressing stacked genes Cry1 Ac
and Cry 2Ab (MON 15985 event)—BG-II by M/s Mahyco.

C. Large Scale Trial of bt Cotton

The GEAC has approved large scale trials of Bt Cotton hybrids in the
North, Central and South zones as follows:

a. North Zone : 16 hybrids containing cry 1 Ac (Mon 531
event ) and 21 hybrids expressing new gene events.

b. Central Zone: 20 hybrids containing cry 1 Ac (Mon 531 event
) and 12 hybrids expressing new gene events.

c. South zone: 25 hybrids containing cry 1 Ac (Mon 531 event )
and 27 hybrids expressing new gene events.

D. Streamlining of the Regulatory Procedure for transgenic
crops.

The MoEF has constituted a sub-Committee on Bt cotton and related
issues under the Chairmanship of Dr C D Mayee, Chairman Agricultural
Scientist Recruitment Board and Co-Chair GEAC with a view to rationalize
the regulatory procedure and facilitate introduction of new technology
to make available cheaper options to farmers.

E. Transgenic Bt Brinjal developed by M/s Mahyco—First GM Food
crop

M/s Mayhco has produced transgenic brinjal plants with cry 1Ac gene
from Bacillus thuringiensis tolerant to the fruit and shoot borer, one of
the major pests which attack the brinjal crop throughout its life
cycle. Their application for large scale trials and seed production of
four Bt Brinjal hybrids namely MHB-4 Bt, MHB 9 Bt MHB 80 Bt and MHBJ-99
Bt containing cry 1 Ac gene during Kharif 2006 is under consideration
of the GEAC. The biosafety data will be placed on MoEF website
[EMAIL PROTECTED] under the sub heading GEAC Clearance shortly.

F. Recombinant Pharma

The GEAC has approved the import and conduct of Phase II clinical
trials with Chimerivaxtm –JE (Japanese Encephalitis vaccine) in children of
descending age from USA by M/s. Quintiles.

The proponents of GM crop argue that if sufficient distance is maintained
inbetween GM crop and normal crop there would be no contamination. This highly
controversial suggestion has already been proved wrong in Europe as GM
contamination spreads across a wide area. Scientists who have warned against
this are livid, but business houses are only interested in the profits.

Altered crops in Europe: At what cost?
By Elisabeth Rosenthal
International Herald Tribune, MAY 25, 2006
http://iht.com/bin/print_ipub.php?file=/articles/2006/05/24/news/gmo.php

ALBONS, Spain Enric Navarro was dumbfounded when the letter arrived
from the testing lab of the Spanish organic farmers association in late
February, informing him that his organic crop contained 12 percent
genetically modified corn. Hearing that his plants had been modified by
biotechnology was almost as traumatic for Navarro as finding they
contained
nuclear waste.

For four years, he has lovingly planted hundreds of varieties of trees,
shrubs, flowers and herbs to attract just the right mix of insects so
that he would not need fertilizers or weed- killers on his precious
seven hectares. "If I could not farm organic, I would not farm," Navarro
said. "I could not sleep at night if I sold that crop."

He burned the corn in the field to rid his farm of what he calls a
"contaminant." But he does not know how the genetically modified seed
blew
in. He cannot claim compensation for his losses. Also, since pollen
lingers, he is not sure when, if ever, it will be safe to use the
field to
farm organic corn again.

As the European Union cracks open the door to genetically modified
crops, Navarro's tale serves as a caution about the risks, scientific
uncertainties and the hazy policies now in place to deal with problems
that
will almost certainly arise.

For eight years, Spain was the only EU member state to allow commercial
cultivation of genetically modified crops. In the last 18 months, the
European Commission has approved 11 genetically modified seeds for
planting in the bloc. In 2005, France, Germany, Portugal and the Czech
Republic began planting small commercial plots.

The cornerstone of the EU's policy is the political conviction that
genetically altered crops and conventional crops can coexist as long as
proper safeguards are in place - such as keeping a distance between the
two types of fields and imposing a liability scheme for accidents.

But scientifically, there are strong disagreements about whether
coexistence is possible, and at what cost.

"Coexistence is feasible in the vast majority of places, so long as
farmers talk to each other and cooperate," agreeing, for example, not to
place GM and conventional seeds of the same crop in adjacent fields,
said Simon Barber of EuropaBio, an industry group in Brussels. Ordeals
like Navarro's, he said, should be rare.

But many scientists - not just those with Green credentials - believe
that the small, closely spaced farms of Europe make such coexistence
difficult if not prohibitively expensive.

"My experts all agreed that coexistence often just doesn't work, it
isn't possible," said Chantal Line Carpentier, an agricultural economist
who assembled an independent panel of international experts to study the
issue in North America.

The study was requested by Mexico in 2002, after GM corn was discovered
contaminating fields of native crops in Oaxaca, hundreds of miles south
of the United States. Mexico had not permitted GM cultivation, for fear
that the heartier, but more uniform, genetically modified variants
would edge out its dozens of unique strains of maize.

That report, "Maize and Biodiversity," prepared by the North American
Council on Environmental Cooperation, concluded that the GM corn - which
came from the United States - might have a long-term effect on Mexico's
ecology and biodiversity and should be more thoroughly studied and
monitored.

The United States and Canada attacked its conclusions. "We are deeply
disappointed that the CEC secretariat has produced a report that ignores
key science about biotechnology," reads a letter of protest from the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

But some farmers believe the report did not go far enough. "Saying that
GM and non-GM farming can coexist is nonsensical," said Julian Rose, an
organic farmer from England who has helped organize Polish farmers
against modified crops. "It's like saying that noise and silence can
coexist in a room."

The biotech industry considers that "coexistence" has been achieved if
mixing is below 0.9 percent. It argues that foods in the EU could be
labeled GM- free if they contained less than that amount. The concept
infuriates advocates of organic foods, who liken it to allowing a bit of
meat in vegetarian products. But even industry analysts admit that 100
percent GM free foods are not practical once GM farming begins on a
large scale. "Coexistence has become a problem in Europe because some
people want zero percent tolerance," Barber said. "And that is, quite
frankly, unobtainable."

There are simply too many ways that mixing occurs: Mills grind crops
from different farms, a cookie contains oil made from imported GM soy.
The GM corn in Oaxaca was most likely the progeny of GM ears that had
been legally imported for animal feed, whose kernels had been illegally
used for planting.

With so many routes, environmental groups say it inevitably spreads
past the 0.9 percent limit and to areas where it is unwelcome.

"When the government of Catalonia says there's no evidence of genetic
pollution, what they mean is they didn't look," said Anna Rosa Martinez
of Greenpeace in Barcelona. Last year, Greenpeace tested 40 organic
farms, and nearly 20 percent had some level of contamination, from 0.7 to
12 percent.

Suzette Jackson, a spokeswoman for Greenpeace International, said: "We
would like to keep Europe as a supplier of non-GM food, and when you
look at countries with a lot of GM crops, it eventually becomes really
hard, or hugely expensive, to maintain regular farming."

Spain allowed GM cultivation in 1998. Twelve percent of corn is now GM
- 50,000 to 60,000 hectares - about half of that in Catalonia.

Farmers are free to choose what to plant, but representatives of GM
seed companies now regularly hold dinners touting the benefits of
modified
seeds, which are patented. Some variants produce pesticides, others
have stalks that resist wind or need less water.

While some farmers signed on, others - like Navarro - said no,
preferring the independence and quality they see with traditional seeds.

Traditional farmers in Mexico, and many in Europe, save seed from one
season's crop to plant the next. It is cheaper and allows selection of
unique varieties. Such replanting is forbidden under the agreement for
GM corn seed that farmers sign with companies like Monsanto and
Syngenta.

In 2004, knowing that GM corn was growing in his area, Navarro planted
just a small patch of land to see if he could grow without
contamination. Successful, he later planted two large corn fields.
"But it was very
windy here last fall," he said, "so perhaps it blew in some stalks from
another field, and contaminated me. I don't know, I will never know."

His two fields are 70 and 100 meters, 230 and 330 feet, from his
neighbors' farms, a distance often deemed adequate to prevent mixing.
But the
GM seed could have come on the wind or on a truck tire, from anywhere.

He would like an investigation to prevent a recurrence. But there is no
reliable log of which farmers plant GM seeds in the area, and farmers
are not likely to confess, for fear of being sued.

In Denmark, to prepare for GM farming, the government is creating a
liability pool that all GM farmers will have to pay in to.

The EU agriculture commissioner, Mariann Fischer Boel, has told EU
states to try to guarantee coexistence, but it is unclear how, or at what
cost. Can farmers afford to maintain buffer zones of 100 meters between
fields? Would it work to create zones specifically designated for GM
crops? Will the GM crops harm the environment?

Cancer surgery concerns Some think breast operation triggers growth of other
tumors

Could surgery to remove breast cancer tumors actually increase the risk
of a relapse? A small group of respected researchers suspects that in a
significant number of women, surgery itself may trigger the rapid growth of
smaller tumors elsewhere in the body. While many cancer experts are
skeptical about the controversial theory, supporters say there is growing
evidence for the idea. "With [surgical] intervention, we may in some cases
make things worse," says Michael Retsky, a researcher at Harvard Medical School
and Children's Hospital in Boston. Retsky argues that more than half of
breast cancer relapses may be accelerated by surgery and says the phenomenon
may apply to surgery for other types of cancer. Proponents of the hypothesis
emphasize that breast cancer patients should not reject or put off surgery. "I
would not want to discourage women from having surgery because of a fear of
spreading tumors," says Dr. Larry Norton, who nonetheless calls
the hypothesis "intriguing." The director of breast cancer research and
treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Norton is
planning lab studies to examine the effects of surgery on secondary, unremoved
tumors. If breast cancer operations do turn out to stimulate tumors,
researchers will have to develop techniques to counteract the effect, perhaps
with drugs that blunt the body's response to surgery. For decades,
scientists have known surgery stimulates production of proteins and other
chemicals to encourage healing. Retsky and others argue that the process
also appears to promote development of small breast cancer tumors scattered
around the body -- growths that had been either dormant or slow-growing.
Known as metastases, these tumors occur in many cancers. Most are tiny,
sometimes just a few cells. "When you operate on someone, you trigger a
cascade of genetic signals that lead to healing. These same signals are just
what a dormant cancer needs to proliferate," says Dr. Michael Baum, a
respected cancer surgeon and researcher at University College in London. He is
one of the theory's most enthusiastic advocates. The hypothesis ties into
another hot area of cancer research. In recent years, scientists have focused
on the idea that tumors need a surrounding network of blood vessels to grow and
spread. Many cancers persuade the body to construct these networks, allowing
the tumors to thrive. Several recent blockbuster drugs, including
Genentech's Avastin, work by shutting off the cancer's ability to create this
complex of vessels. Baum and others believe that surgery can also spur
this blood vessel growth, which is known as angiogenesis. Ironically, they say,
in ramping up the body's wound-healing machinery, an operation may also send
growth signals and nutrients to tumors. The phenomenon may have causes in
addition to angiogenesis. Dr. Judah Folkman, a Harvard
researcher famed for his work on angiogenesis, says that some large primary
tumors may secrete substances to inhibit the growth of smaller secondary
tumors. "One tumor can suppress another one," Folkman says. "The large
tumor controls the others." Once a large tumor is removed, this suppression
wanes. "The brakes are off," he says. Experiments have shown that
this process occurs in mice, and Folkman suspects it also takes place in
humans, too. But no studies have been conducted. The evidence for a
surgical role in cancer growth is credible but not overwhelming. In a paper
last year in the International Journal Of Surgery, Retsky and several
colleagues mined data from a long-running study of 1,173 Italian women with
breast cancer. Retsky noted that deaths from cancer recurrence rose sharply
two years after tumor removal, sooner than might otherwise be expected. He
argued that the only plausible explanation for this early jump in mortality was
the
surgical stimulus given to the distant tumors. And last year, researchers
at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis added some animal
evidence when they surgically removed tumors from a group of mice with breast
cancer. Six weeks later, almost three-quarters of the animals had significant
breast cancer metastases in their lungs. Dr. Susan E. Clare, the surgeon
who led the study, notes that human physiology differs significantly from that
of mice, but says the results should lead to further research in humans. "If
this hypothesis is right, we could save a lot of lives," she says. About
211,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer last year in this country, and
more than 40,000 died from the disease. Retsky says his research indicates
that surgery-induced tumor growth may occur in over half of those deaths.
"Twenty-five thousand women a year die earlier than they otherwise would have,"
he says. "This is a huge effect." Still,
most researchers and doctors express doubts about the theory. "It's an
interesting idea, but the evidence is not really compelling," says
epidemiologist Robert Smith, director of cancer screening for the American
Cancer Society. Smith also questions Retsky's analysis of the mortality
rates. He says the number of increased deaths two years after surgery was too
small to be statistically significant. The notion that surgery can exacerbate
cancer has existed for centuries. In the Middle Ages, some doctors believed
that exposing tumors to air could make them larger. And in recent years, many
doctors have described cases in which large, metastatic tumors appeared weeks
or months after surgery or other physical trauma. But these reports aren't
solid evidence, says breast cancer expert Dr. Harold J. Burstein, an associate
professor at the Harvard Medical School. "There aren't any clinically
compelling data," he says. "There are anecdotes, but they're not consistent."
Retsky agrees that his hypothesis remains unproven. And even if it turns out
to be right, he says, surgery will remain the cornerstone of breast cancer
treatment. Without it, researchers agree, most women with breast cancer have
little chance of survival. If surgery does prove to cause secondary harm,
scientists must devise a way to limit the damage from the healing response.
Baum says patients might begin taking anti-angiogenic drugs such as Avastin
before the operation, to minimize the subsequent stimulus. But as Clare
points out, these drugs are also likely to impede the healing of the surgical
wound itself, a serious potential hitch. Retsky says that researchers must
prove or disprove the idea before they try to solve any subsequent problems.
"We want to work with the disease instead of fighting it," he says. "Now that
we are understanding the problem, it should be much easier."

From: Jagannath Chatterjee

To:
  Dr Anbumani Ramadoss,
Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare,
Ministry of Health & Family Welfare,
  New Delhi.

  Dt: 07.04.06

  Respected Sir,

I have been studying the subject of vaccinations very closely since many
years. I seek your clarification over ethylmercury, a component of Thimerosal,
that is used in all vaccines that are given to children in India. Mercury is
the most dangerous neurotoxin known to mankind. Also it is being felt that the
mass vaccination procedures need a safety belt. As per recent research people
with eczema and psoriasis should not take vaccines for eruptive diseases like
small pox and measles. Experts also say that sick and malnourished children,
immunodeficient persons, and children with low body mass index should not be
subjected to vaccinations.

Mercury, a component of the vaccine additive Thimerosal, is not the only
harmful ingredient in vaccines. Aluminium hydroxide is another heavy metal that
causes harm and also boosts the damage causing ability of ethylmercury.
Vaccines also contain a slew of carcinogens like ethanol, glycol, formaldehyde
and glutamic acid. The risk from contaminated serum in vaccines from cows,
horses, pigs, monkeys and aborted human fetuses, is also very great. It is
openly acknowledged that vaccines have changed the genetic makeup of humans
through genetic contamination.

It is a fallacy to assume that vaccines have caused a fall in epidemic
diseases. Better hygiene has led to that. Also vaccines have been introduced
when the epidemics were already on a downward trend.
  see link:
http://www.tetrahedron.org/articles/vaccine_awareness/vaccination_inefficacy.html

It is also a fact that vaccines containing live viruses have caused the very
disease in victims which they were expected to prevent. According to medical
experts, the battery of viruses introduced into the body via vaccines can
interact with the viruses already present to create unknown dangers. They also
warn against the use of genetically modified viruses in vaccines as the study
of genetics is still in its infancy and side effects can be devastating.

The vaccination industry does not bother about the lives of people. It
perpetuates the vaccine myth to preserve its own existence and boost profits.
The industry spends millions of dollars in lobbying every year. It has on its
list of shareholders the most powerful politicians of the world.

The arguement that mercury in vaccines is within the safe limits is a farce.
By the time 24 vaccine shots are injected to a child, the level of mercury in
the unfortunate toddlers blood is 48 to 120 times higher than normal. This
mercury lodges itself in the fat cells of the brain to cause irreversible
damage. This has been proved by a recent study on mice by the scientists of a
Californian medical institute.

The vaccine industry is now scared at the apparition of having to face
innumberable law suits as vaccine damage is pegged at $ 20.00 lacs per victim
by legal experts. Considering that there is an upward of one million vaccine
injured children in the US, It is no wonder that the industry improperly
induced an American politician to seek immunity from law suits.

The CDC has been aware of the dangers of vaccinations since 1938 as uncovered
by the concerned parents of vaccine damaged American children. Thimerosal was
introduced as a decontaminant in vaccines in 1930. Vaccine injury, due to other
causes, has been a subject for discussion among scientists since 1909.

Recently the senior editor of the UPI dubbed the vaccination process as the
"recruitment tactics" of the drug industry as vaccines cause diseases that the
drug makers profit from by the sale of their medicines. Besides autism,
vaccines may be behind attention deficit disorders, increased stress levels,
meningitis, encephalitis, neuromuscular ailments, irritable bowel, diabetes,
arthritis, Parkinsons, Alzheimers, and even AIDS. It is not unknown that the
Simian Virus SV 40, as well as SV 20, was introduced into humans via the polio
vaccine. These are not figments of the imagination but the statements of
vaccine experts who are associated with the process of vaccine making.

The entire vaccine process is untested. Vaccines are tested for only 48
hours though it is widely known that vaccine effects can occur after weeks,
months or even years. Autism, for example, occurs after three years. There has
been no effort to test the combined effect of the various metal, chemical and
serum contents. Even ethylmercury is untested, we can know of its dangers only
from methylmercury, its close cousin, which is a highly dangerous neurotoxin.
Each component is a potential danger, the combined effect may be worse as they
interact among themselves in unknown ways.

The effects of vaccines on the weak, the pregnant, the undernourished and the
sick has NEVER BEEN STUDIED.The effects of multiple vaccinations has also never
been studied. The effects of vaccination stays for life and also passes into
the next generation, an aspect that too has never been studied. As we vaccinate
each subsequent generation we add to the vaccine dyscrasia. This is the
"foolproof" science that we all talk about. Here the consideration is not
science but "economics".

As per the homeopaths, raw and unprocessed mercury has the capability of
affecting people at the emotional level and boost criminal tendencies besides
inducing people to lead degenerate lives. That it causes severe emotional flare
ups has been observed in autistic children. Homeopaths have also warned against
the dangers of injecting human and animal serum directly into the bloodstream.
They say it causes an effect very similar to suppressed veneral diseases.

There is another aspect that needs to be looked into, what if certain
childhood diseases are a result of the body's effort to eliminate the toxins of
the growing process? Are we not doing a great disservice by not allowing the
body to grow naturally? And what about vaccine induced diseases for which we
may be injecting more vaccines? According to the CDC, meningitis and
encephalitis are two vaccine induced conditions that merit vaccine injury
compensation.

In the land of the vaccines, the USA, there is a Vaccine Adverse Effect
Reporting System database which is maintained to know of vaccine dangers. The
vaccine industry pays upwards of $80 million every year as vaccine injury
compensation from a fund set up by the US government. The CDC also warns
parents of vaccine allergies on its website. Seven states in the US have banned
the use of mercury containing Thimerosal in vaccines and 20 other states have
legislation lined up for the same. Old stock of these banned vaccines still
continue to be shipped to third world countries like India as per American
anti-vaccine activists. It is very difficult for the third world countries to
do away with the mercury as large multi-use vials are used here for multiple
use and there is a great risk of contamination from repeated injections into
the vials for repeated extraction. The mercury is used in liberal doses as a
decontaminant.

In India the public is blissfully unaware of the dangers involved. Vaccine
injuries, even if reported, are denied vehemently let alone compensated. This
is just not done in a democracy. When we are forcibly injected something we
should have the right to know both of its composition and the dangers. The
government should make public this information as well as study the various
implications of the vaccination process as detailed above. Vaccine camps are no
parties where parents should be invited to in a festive spirit so that poisons
can be injected into their children without their knowledge.

Sir, I believe you are not entirely ignorant of what I have expressed in my
letter to you. No one is. It seems everyone knows the dangerous implications of
the vaccination system except the hapless people on whom the vaccines are
forcibly injected. I have met many Health Officials who have preferred to
remain silent against my arguements. They say that they are helpless against
government orders and that the government is helpless against the WHO
guidelines. It is also well known that certain very powerful political powers
wish to utilise the vaccination procedure to foster bio terrorism and forcible
population control.

I would request you to kindly look into this very grave issue, ascertain the
facts, and try to find a way to introduce preventive measures which are humane
and sensible. Diseases can be very well prevented by better hygiene and
nutrition and also by the use of the homeopathic vegge vaccines. Such
alternatives need to be urgently looked into. Modern medicine is purely profit
oriented and will not mend its murderous ways to benefit humanity.

I have been intending to write to you on this matter for a long time. Today I
came across an article in an American newspaper, copy enclosed, which speaks of
public anger and American Congress diaspproval of the vaccination procedure and
highlights the callous and criminal negligence of the CDC. I could contain
myself no longer.

Please do as you deem fit. The future of India's health will depend upon your
decision.

  Respectfully yours,
  Jagannath Chatterjee,
  Health Reform Activist.

Controversy over autism eats at credibility of CDC
Alison Young - Staff
Thursday, April 6, 2006

http://www.ajc.com/today/content/epaper/editions/today/news_44437aaa906db0c7003f.html

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, rarely the subject of public
controversy, is facing an emerging credibility crisis on the emotional issue of
whether old-style vaccines containing a mercury preservative caused autism in
thousands of children. The agency is being accused of cover-ups and
scientific manipulations by vocal advocates of autism awareness. It also is
facing questions from some high-profile members of Congress. As the debate
and controversy increasingly find their way into pediatricians' offices,
average parents of healthy children are questioning whether vaccines are safe,
sometimes even refusing inoculations. The CDC and other public health
officials insist such questions lack a basis in fact or science. Their greatest
concern is that the broadening debate holds the potential to put a new
generation of children at certain risk of deadly diseases if confidence in the
safety of vaccines is lost and they don't receive recommended shots. "I
think it's huge," said Dr. Julia McMillan, a member of the American Academy of
Pediatrics committee that makes vaccine recommendations. "There's no
pediatrician in practice that doesn't confront this on a weekly basis: families
who are questioning the need for --- and in some cases refusing --- vaccines
for their children." But the academy and the CDC are in agreement. They say
there is no evidence to support a connection between autism and the
mercury-based preservative thimero-sal, which they stress is no longer used in
most pediatric vaccines. "We simply don't know what the cause of autism is,"
Dr. Robert Davis, the CDC's director of immunization safety, said Wednesday.
Nonetheless, the CDC is at the center of criticism. A full-page ad scheduled
to run in today's editions of USA Today, the nation's largest circulation
newspaper, accuses the CDC of "causing an epidemic of autism" by recommending
that children receive a series of vaccines that until 2001 contained
thimerosal. The ad, placed by various advocacy groups, quotes environmental
lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as saying: "It's time for the CDC to come clean
with the American public." But what stings public health advocates more is a
letter sent Feb. 22 by Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) and seven other members
of Congress. The bipartisan group asks that the CDC not take the lead on a new
study examining the vaccine-autism issue. "If the federal government is going
to have a study whose results will be broadly accepted, such a study cannot be
led by the CDC," the group wrote Dr. David Schwartz, new director of the
National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The institute, a part of
the National Institutes of Health, will convene a panel in May to discuss how
to analyze a key CDC database to determine whether autism rates have dropped
since thimerosal was removed from vaccines. The letter was also signed by
Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Rep. Dave Weldon
(R-Fla.), Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), Rep. Dan
Burton (R-Ind.), Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y,) and Rep. Maurice Hinchey
(D-N.Y.). Agency officials said Wednesday they are proud of the CDC's work on
thimerosal safety issues and that they have looked hard to find a link as well
as to find any other cause of autism. "It was an unfortunate choice of
language," Davis said of the Lieberman letter. "They and everyone else are
certainly entitled to their opinion. We stand by all the research we have
done." Public health officials who work with the CDC are more blunt. "I
think it's shocking," said Dr. Martin Myers, executive director of the National
Network for Immunization Information and a professor of pediatrics at the
University of Texas medical branch in Galveston. "The loss of public trust in
one of the most extraordinary institutions in the world. I'm not quite sure how
that has occurred, but it has, and that's one of the unfortunate
consequences," Myers said. The controversy, which erupted as a rally was
scheduled on Capitol Hill today in conjunction with National Autism Month, is
gaining political traction. It is moving well beyond an initial core of autism
activists, the CDC amd public health and congressional officials all agree.
There are many parents of autistic children who believe, as do most
pediatricians and scientists, that there is no scientific evidence that
thimerosal caused autism and other neurological disorders. That issue was
settled for most in a widely publicized 2004 report by an expert panel convened
by the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine. But the report has
been the subject of controversy and intense scrutiny since it was published.
Parents of many autistic children insist that thimerosal caused the disorder,
because it appeared around the time their children received vaccinations. Their
advocates also point to what they say is intriguing new research
in animal models indicating that some individuals may be more sensitive to
thimerosal than others. Martin Cowen, whose family lives in Jonesboro, is one
such parent. Cowen is convinced thimerosal-containing vaccines caused his son
Lindsey's autism. Lindsey, who turned 8 last week, does not speak, has not been
toilet trained and cannot be allowed outdoors without being restrained for fear
he'll run into traffic, his father said. Cowen is highly skeptical of the
CDC, a position shared by a cohort of parents and advocates across the country.
"An enormous effort is being made to deny the connection," he said of the
CDC. "What do I think their motive is? They are very interested in having the
herd vaccinated. . . . They don't think of people as people suffering
individually. It's the greatest good for the greatest number." The National
Immunization Program, run by the CDC, coordinates immunization activities
across the country. Increasing the rate of immunization
against disease is a cornerstone of public health. At the same time, the CDC
also is charged with monitoring vaccine safety. It's an inherent conflict of
interest, said Weldon, a doctor before he was elected to Congress. "They
really do have a credibility problem," said Weldon, who serves on the committee
that decides the CDC's budget. "Part of the credibility problem is it's asking
them to investigate a problem that they may have created." Weldon became
involved in the thimerosal issue seven years ago. "Honestly, at first I was
very dubious," he said. "As I looked at it more and more, I began to feel there
is some validity to this." Weldon said the recent interest by Lieberman and
others on Capitol Hill is a sign the issue is gaining currency. Lieberman was
unavailable for comment. The controversy and public debate is likely to be
further fueled by the full-page ad being paid for by a coalition of the autism
activist groups led by Generation Rescue. The ad
promotes a sophisticated Web site, www.PutChildren First.org, which includes
links to CDC documents, e-mails and transcripts the groups say support their
contention of an agency cover-up. CDC spokesman Glen Nowak said many of the
documents on the site have been in the public domain for years, and are
presented out of context and in ways that may "look quite ominous" when they're
not. "It's a very challenging issue," he said. The CDC is bracing for a spike
in calls today from parents with questions and is increasing staffing at its
public help line, 1-800-232-4636. This advertisement, scheduled to run in
today's USA Today newspaper, complains that the CDC has covered up the
connection between childhood vaccines and autism.

JUST THE FACTS
Autism
> A neurological disorder that causes problems with communication skills and
> the ability to have normal social interactions. Autism and related autism
> spectrum disorders (ASD) cover a range of symptoms that can vary from mild to
> severe.
> The cause is unknown, affecting more boys than girls.
> There is no count of how many people have autism in the United States.
> Estimates range from 1 in 500 to 1 in 166 children who have autism or an
> autism spectrum disorder, roughly 24,000 children each year.
Thimerosal
> A preservative widely used to prevent bacterial growth in vaccines until the
> late 1990s. It contains mercury.
> Mercury, at high levels, is known to damage the nervous system. But its
> effect at low levels is unclear.
> In 1999, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the U.S. Public Health Service
> and the American Academy of Family Physicians issued a joint statement
> concluding that while there was no evidence of harm from the use of
> thimerosal in vaccines, it should be removed from pediatric vaccines as a
> precaution.
> Except for some influenza vaccines, thimerosal has been removed from most
> vaccines routinely given to children age 6 and younger.

Dear GK & friends,

it is good to have such determination; although, I am not perfect, I
appreciate that determination you have; then, it is at your personal level, if
you can carry on with good conviction, there is nothing equal to it.

I was reflecting on a certain thing very recently; as in the case of
Arichandra, I had a evaluation whether I have to be Arichandra or not; I
decided not to be Arichandra, but I have not fully made this decision, it is
partial, the dilemma is very great; this is at my personal level; as a
consequence on this I was also evaluating another aspect..b a decision I took
when I was at School thinking I can understand people and went very indifferent
to rest of myself. When, I go back and think on this, I feel that I should be
very sensitive to everyone, to their feelings and sentiment.. may be one way
the terrorists can also be brought back to normalcy.

I went through some of the postings in BUM. I am happy that good things are
happening. However, I shall mention one thought that occurred that the ideals
are just like the UN Charter for Human Rights, what the economists call for a
dream land, Utopia; the charter itself declares that it is not necessary for
the time being to be acts or law of each country(some thing of this sort), a
very pathetic state of courage-hood we are in.

If we have a balanced look at this, as we evolve our system and ourselves, we
have to rise from where we are, the trend must be visible, the intention must
be clear, actions must reflect the growth...

anyhow, we have to have some basic values so that we can always feel proud of
achievements.

god gives us the mind which is to be good!

Dear Friends,
Please find attached a feed back from one of my friend:

Infact, I made a lie that I am not a social entrepreneur; to be very true, I
am prospecting to be one and really want to earn my living through it, making
it most successful. If I earn more, I would be the most satisfying person, as
my earnings would come as compensations to the good services I make. The more
the earnings, the more good services, not the usual corporate thing, more
profit margin.

We meet at some point in our delivery of services to the very needy people.
Now, my standard of living is through hard earnings from serving the poor or
backward people. Now, I am earning roughly Rs. 30000/- per month working for
Tsunami Rehabilitation works and training workers. Had I stayed and adjusted
myself to the work-environments both in public and private organizations, for a
sensible person like me, It might have not been difficult to earn much more
than this. But, the hitch is had I done. My ego would have not allowed me to do
so, as I am not enthused by it for known and un-known reasons; even, I would
have failed, contrary to my thinking...

But, now my standard is, if I could earn the same Rs30000/- per month by
working for poor, with still higher productive, just imagine how beautiful it
would be!, Now, I am in that world. I think it may not be difficult. If you are
valuable to corporate house, can't you be more valuable to a very needy
person(s)?

The moment we change, we radiate the energy to others for the change; it is
on-going exercise, learning exercise; perhaps, I have not mastered it, cultured
myself... I should thank the opportunity I got in recent assignment, from both
GRI & CARE; we, managers failed to deliver few good services, even as reputed
organizations; still, there are lots of hopes.. the very needy people are
waiting for us, to help them, to lift them up!

my friend your questions/doubts are genuine and we have to seek answers; the
only problem is that I am not yet ready to face the challenge! I am
cultivating/training myself to rise to the occasion.

  with warm regards,

  PP

  Dear Purusothaman,

Your dream of "living/earning through social ventures" and the definition by
Bill Drayton seems to be contradicting each other. Will you be able to sustain
your standard of life for the rest of your life period. If the answer is yes,
then the next question is will you be able to support/sustain the efforts to
change the society in whatever way you imagine?. Again if yes, have you
decided on the change needed for our soceity? I sincerely apologise that many
of our friends including me, may not be able answer in affirmative to the above
questions.
I want to stress that the above views are not discouraging you or any body from
our friends circle; but only to open up a self introspection.

Regards

Hi all,
I'm one of the moderators of the Chennai chapter.

One of the activities we're planning is to conduct essay writing/oratorical
competitions in some schools.
The theme could be patriotic, to create a national awareness etc.

Your suggestions for good topics are welcome.

We also thought we could distribute small books about India/ freedom struggle/
great people etc and then conduct quiz competitions based on them after a few
days... So the children will try to read the book.

Such a book has to be very cheap... should have good content.
It would be great if it is out of copyright so we can reproduce easily.

Your suggestions for any such book that fits the requirement is welcome.

Any other suggestions also...

Please mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Regards,
Prahalathan.
