Well we have a winner folks! Jay has, IMHO, asked the most interesting question
this year. Since most are looking for a way to make their 02' or 320i handle
better, like a newer/tighter car, there may be very little experience for tuning
the retro feel. Now Don has the right idea about 'tossability' with the M
coupe. BTW, I drove over a nickel and could tell it was heads-up!

Jay, most anything you do will tighten the suspension and feel of your car.
What you want to try is to loosen it to get that E28 feeling. ;-) So, IN A
GESTING MANNER, I suggest this for your great handling E36. Drain most of the
power steering fluid out of the well. Don't run it dry but get it just right so
the steering is sluggish. Then drop the tire pressures to about 25psi. Run
some Crown regular gas in it. You'll drive it for a few minutes and put it all
back. LOL Consider it as driving an E28! All you senior five drivers can
just relax since I'm just kidding and love the E28 cars.

I don't really have an answer for you Jay. But if you come to O'Fest I'll give
you a guest drive in my 88' M5 so you can get that 'retro' feeling.

Subject: [uuc] Clunk, clunk noise heard from engine under full power

Well, there was some info in my post about Sunday's dyno session that seemed to
go unnoticed. BTW, the list seems pretty quiet....I hope it's not because of
the storms and power outages.

Anyway, to add to Steve D's comment about the dyno session and how the
Dynopacks were really quiet and all that you really heard was the car, my car
made this weird sound during the session.

It was a click, clack, clack diesel-type sound when the operator "floored" it
and the rpms slowly climbed from 3k -> 7k rpms. Several other people also
noticed some engine shake at the beginning of the run. The noise was about 2
per sec....so something like 2-3Hz. This noise was hear while the engine was
screaming and I was standing right next to the engine. (too bad I didn't get to
see the speedo.....btw, where does the speedo obtain its speed reading? Front
wheels? Tranny? Rear wheels?)

Wayne Miller's car didn't make the diesel sound, but it did make this weird
swoosh sound.

Anyway, both cars were warmed up prior to the run. I have an oil temp gauge at
it was showing ~180 degrees farenheit (and more by the time the two runs were
over). Engine oil is Mobile 1 synthetic and hits the top level indicator on
the dipstick. My car has 17k miles on the odo.

Any ideas of where I should look for the noise? Man, too bad I hadn't run
Techron prior to this dyno session! =)

TIA,
Chester

Hi guys-
I need some help please. I am posting this for a net impaired friend.
Is there a wiring diagram for an Alpina B6 available (it's an E30 with a big
SIX). I think the timing continually advances until it stumbles and then
starts over. Also, how does the brain pick up the crankshaft position
reference signal? There isn't a normal reference pickup that is usually
present.
HELP!!!!!!!.
Cheers-
Brad

Ren,

Is the article online somewhere for us to read about it? I'm ASSuming that
it's the SuperCharged 540i you were talking about. If not, that's one
powerful J Stock Club Racer...

Umm..

I remember seeing a 1997 528i that ran through Manheim Auto Auction with
something like 120K on it.

Read about it on a Market report...

Would that do it?

Subject: [uuc] Khumos or Yokos

Robbie writes..

<<Carter,

Few things and then some real advice.

First off the Yok will last the longest, be best in the rain, and if you
can handle the noise (sorta like a monster truck going down the street)
treat you well as a daily tire.>>

Remember Robbie, this is not my daily driver.

<<However--- It won't stick near as well as the Kumho. That's all ya need to
 know.>>

Yes, that is a factor.

 <<Now the REAL advice part:

There are many reasons people come Club Racing. One of which is a chance
to be in a glorified driver school where you can pass wherever you want. If
that's the plan than that's cool too, enjoy the Yoks and watch your
 mirrors.>>

It's a 325E. I'll do A LOT of mirror watching regardless of tire choice.
:-) Ha ha.

<< However, it is called Club "RACING" so things like maximum
adhesion and grip mean a lot. At first you may be fine with the Yoks, but
in time lap times become a very real concern and one of the easiest places
to trim the fat is in tires.>>

I am planning to do some "RACING" for sure. And yes, the tire performance is
most important.

<<More advice: driving home from driver schools should be a no brainer.
Personally I drive the race car to driver schools all the time. That is
because it's just that- a driver school. Things may get a little fast in
the instructor group sometimes, but no 10/10ths business. That's for the
races. You should never really fear how to get home because you can
control most of the variables. Races are another world. YOU NEVER KNOW
what can happen to you in a race.>>

I was co-driving with Holland Hale at Mid Ohio last October in his J Stock
E30 M3. I saw your driver door and left front fender. You're not kidding!
;-) <grin>

Also, (still grinning and kidding you a little, all in good fun) you finished
25th overall and first in I stock. We finished 18th overall and first in
J-stock, the next SLOWER class. In all fairness though you did a 1:46:7 and
Holland did a 1:47:0. I did a 1:47:3 in Holland's car (not having been in a
rear drive car on-track in 7 years). You also did a 2:20:2 on lap
29.....oops! Is this an example of "you never know what can happen to you in
a race?" LOL !

<<It's racin'-shit happens. You'd be really better off getting your hands
on a truck and trailer for going to races.>>

If I have a major incident, I'll leave the car at the track, drive 90 minutes
home, rent a Uhaul trailer, hook it to my Mazda MPV (4500 lbs. towing
capacity) and will bring it home. This combination (I owned a new dual axle
open trailer at the time) worked well for 7 years racing in SCCA's Improved
Touring category. Not to boast but we won the Southeast Endurance
Championship in '96. Seven years of very serious IT racing, at or near the
front, with only one incident where I couldn't have "driven the car home."

In all seriousness, our second child arrived a few months ago and I like the
13/13 rule. I'm turning the wick down a little for now. I know how to have
fun but keep it clean. Plus, there probably won't be another L-Stock car
there. I'll race hard but cleanly with those who are around me. If two
same-class cars are going at it, I'll move over, will let them pass, and will
enjoy the best seat at the track for watching a good dice.

<<Final recommendation: Buy a set of Yoks for all of your schools and
commuting. Buy a set of Kumhos just for use at the races.

 Good luck-

 Robbie Kollar
 # 22 I-Stock 95 M3 >>

Actually, I think I'll buy a set of 15 x 7's for the Khumos and will keep the
Mich MXV4's for rain, and the few street miles this car will see this year.
It looks like I can get two wrapped tires in the passenger seat and two in
the trunk.

Good luck in 2000 and I hope we see you at VIR this May. www.virclub.com

Come over after the day's racing is over and have a cold one.

Best,
Carter Hunt

IMHO, Any "enthusiast" automotive magazine that gets that excited about
those Bridgestone(?) tires with multi-color treads and goes out of the way
to see if the burnout marks left on pavement will also be similarly colored
does not belong on my nightstand or cofee table...

For the past several years, MT has become like a Sport Compact Car, only
without the helpful (sometimes) DIY articles...
