Subject: [uuc] <E30>M42 odd stumbling and dying...cured!

A while back I was having an odd stumbling and dying problem (well, the
car was, anyhow) with our M42 318is, and it was odd mostly in that it
was intermittent.
The symptoms were thus: it would happen after warning up on a cold day
(anything below ~45* or so). It would die every time it dropped down to
idle, and when it was started back up, it hesitated terribly, and even
when it was running well, the idle was very erratic.
I got a few replies as to things to look for, and the one that seemed to
peg it was the Idle Control Module.
Well, the ICM was replaced, and we've had nary a hesitation since. Even
with the sub-zero temps we've had lately.

I didn't know about this - thanks for the correction. Sorry to those I
doubted :). I do remember reading something about early production M5s
appearing in 1984, and thought these would effectively pre-date the
production-run M635CSi. I wasn't aware these were special-order only - wow,
what must have you been to be special enough to have an M car made for you?

And Richard ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) writes from Blighty:

> ABS!!! as in Anti Braking System does not reduce stopping
> distances if anything they increase slightly

True, but only if the non-ABS-assisted stop is perfect and repeatable. For
most people, ABS is a godsend. As we know, it takes bugger-all skill at all
to stomp on a pedal and hold it there (something for the 'Vette-mounted
stoplight desperados to think about, but I digress :)).

> ABS in snow or ice is very weird even at a slow speed

Indeed - ABS is often non-functional on ultra-low-friction surfaces, as
there is not enough friction between the tyre and the surface to get the
wheel turning again after it has been braked. In the 80's, Audi fitted
switches to its cars that deactivated the ABS; the belief was that the best
way to stop a car in powdered snow was to lock the tyres and let a wedge of
the stuff build up in front of them. Anyone fancy ripping the fuse out and
taking the car out for a spin to test the theory?

...but no less useless than non-ABS brakes on the same frictionless surfaces.
With non-ABS, heaven forbid you hit a tiny dry patch with one wheel that will
send your car into a spin worse than with ABS.

And they were right. Snow-on-snow works better at stopping a car than wet
tire on snow. That's also the idea behind Blizzak/Alpin-type tires - they
have a type of rubber which is micro-siped to hold on to snow, actually get a
layer to stick to the tire so there's traction. It's believed that Audi
removed the ABS-disable switch for fear of litigation. As always, this
litigious society is itching for a reason to sue and a non-ABS skid resulting
in an accident (despite the fact that the driver pressed the button) would
form a nice and ridiculous basis for a suit. Think how few drivers know what
the advanced features of their cars are - I've seen owners think that the ASC
button on their BMWs turned the traction control *on*, not off.

> Anyone fancy ripping the fuse out and
> taking the car out for a spin to test the theory?

Sure. Bring me a car identical to mine and we'll re-test this proven effect
on snow or gravel. Non-ABS works better on those surfaces... but overall I'll
leave the ABS functional.

Thanks a lot for your replies Chris and Charlie.

So the engine seems quit pulletproof, was it nessecarry to replace any
'major' parts (injection pump etc). What exactly went bad with the tranny?
Should there be made any particular mods, like extra cooling.

Have you used biodiesel by any chance ?

Is cavitation an issue for these engines, is there any special treatment of
coolant etc.

Thanks again.

Moe ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) writes:

Anthony waxed comical about Motor Trend's yee-ha tendencies, although I'd
imagine most car journos would be immature enough to try technicolour
burn-outs, especially if it's someone else's tyres/car. Now, most car rags
bleat on about their favourite car/country/pastime to the exclusion of
others - Brit publications are often parochial, and the Aussie ones are
bloody awful - but I found MT unbelievably one-eyed. Any magazine which
finds a FWD Monte Carlo SS "kinda sporty" and just the right sort of car for
a young thruster needs a wide berth (forgive me, I've not driven a sporty
new Monte Carlo, but I have driven its smaller Cavalier-badged brother and
really that was quite enough). I even forgave Car & Driver for its
ridiculous defence of the Ford Excursion - "but it's only as big as an
Econoline, what's the big deal?" - because the writing is often quite sharp,
at least to my peculiar British SOH. But Motor Trend? Style- and wit-free.

As for the CotY awards - it's an irrelevance for many, a death-knell for
others. The Porsche 928 made the European CotY once, but then so did the
Renault 9/Alliance, amongst other rust-friendly econoboxes. A wheeled
abomination called the Leyland P76 (don't ask) won a CotY award in Australia
many years ago, and now one rag down here has a Leyland P76 Award for the
WORST CotY...

Hi Guys,

I'm on a quest to find a daily driver for my fianc'. It doesn't have to be
pretty, it just needs to be something she can drive, oh and it has to be an
automatic tranny. We need something inexpensive around $2500.

If anyone has any leads or a car they might want to part with for this
price I'd appreciate an email.

Thanks,

Jacob

I was wondering if anyone knew the approximate price (best guess) for the
new E46 M3.
I'd imagine that it would have to be significantly more expensive than the
current M3 with
the euro 3.4L 340 hp I-6 (or even a V-8!). Basically, anyone heard a
range? 45-50k base???

Just starting to save my pennies...and want to know how big of a piggy bank
I should buy!

Also, I heard of one dealer taking deposits and the other told me not until
the spring.

On most surfaces, a high performance ABS will stop shorter than non-ABS.
The exceptions are some GM 4WD trucks in 2WD which get confused easily
(recall this month) and loose surfaces that can pile up in front of a locked
tire. ABS is not a magic elixir. Oddly, the greatest improvement is on dry
pavement. Also no flatspotting.

Most drivers are VERY POOR when it comes to extreme situations and will do
all kinds of bad things. Some cheapie ABS does trade stopping distance for
control. This is usually a good thing for most drivers. You can always
pull the fuse/relay and compare.

That German Banker would be Thomas Bscher; not your average amateur
weekend racer. If you check the European FIA GT race entry lists
(LeMans, among them) over the past few years, you'd see his name.
He's supposed to have played a large role in persuading McLaren to
build the racing versions of the F1 road car. He also ran the
unloved '98 BMW LeMans car in the '99 race. Bill Auberlen and Steve
Soper co-drove.
