Thanks to Mario Langsten, Andrew Taylor, Curt Kiser, and "euro
wrench" Richard for suggestions on random engine cutout behaviour.
Thus far, we have replaced main, fuel pump relays. All new fuses in
the fuse box (contacts are clean). Tightened ground points to chassis
at 2 locations. Checked connectors to thermo switches, speed &
reference sensors, AFM, all clean. Have also just taken out the speed
& reference sensors, cleaned significant gunk off the ends, and
swapped them (they're the same parts).
Initial impression after driving around for a short while after
cleaning & swapping the sensors was that the problem has gone away.
We'll have to continue driving it to see if the problem is really
gone. Also will definitely check the other ground connections as
mentioned at the intake.
Thanks for the suggestions, and keep 'em coming if you have any new
thoughts on the matter!

Sunday I reported here that Zanardi was off the Williams F1 team, to be
replaced by either Jenson Button or Bruno Junqueira. In today's
newspapers, it was reported that Jenson Button has been chosen, and given a
one year contract. Says he is the fifth youngest driver in F1 history (age
20). Since Button doesn't have much experience, I'd imagine 1) he's making
a lot less than the $5.5 million that Zanardi was going to make (or perhaps
he even brought some sponsorship money with him?), and/or 2) he has
connections with BMW.

I wonder if Jason's friends call him "Cute-as-a" Button?

Subject: [uuc] Re: E46 M3 - Price on new M3?? WOB Rant

Excellent rant, John - let it out.

on the other hand, think about the things that the E46 will have over the E36 :
(all speculation of course)

100hp more - lots of people pay $5k for super/turbo chargers to get this or
slightly more power, plus it's still under warranty.
6-speed trans
standard 18" wheels & tires
standard DSC - like it or not, it's got a real cost to the vehicle
more unique body panels than E36 (hood & fenders on E36 were common with non-M,
right ?) - costs tooling

I think that a lot of people are preapred to pay $5k for just the 100hp & the
6-speed transmission.

additionally, it seems likely that there will be fewer options on the E46 vs.
the E36. recall that there are hardly any major options on the M coupe/roadster
& the M5 (these might not necessarily be good comparison, but oh well.)

just my very miminal contribution.

agree that the bimmer.org message boards are a good source of (mis)information.
Trust "Bruce" in Texas - he has a very good source for future model stuff.

Subject: [uuc] ABS Switch

It is possible to wire up a switch to turn the ABS off and on. I know a
number of drivers in NCC who have done it. Those with E30 2doors punch out
the area of the console that is not needed for the 4door window switches and
use that area to mount the switch. Wiring the switch is easy. Most
drivers who have done it will not share the wiring diagrams because of
liability concerns. They don't want to be sued by your estate when you do
something stupid.

This feature is primarily used for track days when both feet in is a great
deal more predictable then ABS and for Northeasters like today in DC. Four
snow tires and 100lbs of sand and no problem driving around the neighborhood
in 8inches of snow. Streets unplowed.

The hunt is really on now for my next bimmer. 5 series, here I come!
BTW, check out the link below. Located in BC. Man, if I didn't have

Someone asked when the tickets were going to be assigned so I'll pass this
on. I called the Indy people today & they said they just started processing
ticket orders yesterday, and that the entire process could take until the
end of April. They will send out notices once a week to those whose tickets
were assigned the previous week. It is unclear why they waited since October
1 to start processing the orders, but universities are even worse in
processing NCAA tourny orders (pay in advance, wait a year to find out if
you got tickets; if not, you made interest free loan to them). At least the
Indy people won't charge you unless & until your seats are assigned.

OBMWC: the BMW f1 car has possibly the most bland, unimaginative "paint"
scheme in F1 history. And that includes the monochromatic cars of the
50s-60s. Lame, lame, lame. It would look better if it were just white and
someone stuck a bunch of m3 LTW decals on it in random places and painted a
big roundel on the nose and rear wing. No M colors or logo whatsoever. It
will probably look even lamer with the sponsor stickers.

John Stoj has a WOB rant, so I'll add some WOB to it:

And I could easily name 100 things which have remained the same
price or gotten better and cheaper - think about your computer,
TV set, etc..

>Items this digest might care about include gasoline - which historically
>drops in price in the US during the winter. The exact opposite has been

Take a bit longer term view.. 35 years ago when I started driving,
gas cost $0.29/gallon. I drove an 8 year old $300 VW beatle..
during the mid '70's - we had a 'fuel-crisis' and gas went up
and up and up.. to $0.85/gallon, then to - gasp! $1.19/gallon
(all NJ prices) - they had to make new gas pumps to take care
of the over $.99 price. I was driving a new Volvo P1800E - cost
was $4600.. (and a new BMW - about the same or less $$$)

Now - 2000 - fuel in NJ - premium - ranges from $1.24 to $1.44/gallon.
I drive a $42,000 M-Coupe.

Fuel in the USA is not overpriced by any means. I make something
like 20x what I made back in 1964 - and fuel costs 5x? I make
10x what I made in the mid 70's - and fuel costs - not much more?

A simple 500 fund would..

Compare it to 10 years ago, 20 years ago.

No - we all certainly aren't bond brokers making $1 million
bonuses - but I suspect there are very few people on this
list who are actually hurting.. and if you can afford a $50k
car - I certainly wouldn't cry over it.

anywhere, I need to start cleaning out all this stuff I'll never use.
Shipping will be high 'cause it weighs, well, what a wheel usually weighs

What would happen if you simply pulled out the ABS relay. Would you get a
fault that would need to be cleared at the dealer or by a resetting tool?

I'd like to have a switch that keeps my ASC-T OFF.
I usually forget to turn off my ASC-T at the track. I sometimes leave
myself a post it on the steering wheel.

Christopher,

Is this by any chance a '95 or post '96 M3?

If you have a post '96 M3 (DME MS41.2), which seems to be the case, the only
way to pull the codes out is to buy some sort of code extractor like from
Peake Research. You can also buy an OBD2 program that goes into your laptop.

Hopefully it's not the oxygen sensor but if it's still under warrenty, bring
it to the dealer. There can be other cases like a low fuel EVAP leak,
injector problems, incorrect voltage signals etc.

Have them print out a diagnostic sheet so you can see what code(s) come up.
There's a Service Bulletin (12 10 97) on this matter.
Good Luck!
