My 1988 535is developed a bad stumble at part throttle today. The more load on the engine (the more I push the gas pedal), the worse it stumbles. At wide open throttle (WOT), it runs fine. This problemmanifests itself all the way up to 4500 RPM. I did not try driving at engine speeds higher than that due to the horrific road conditions in NJ tonight. Also, the car seems to idle a little rougher than usual, but my car always idles like crap so the rougher idle may not be related. The problem can't be fuel or ignition related because the car runs fine at WOT. Which sensors does the ECU reference ap part throttle but ignore at WOT? Harrison" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] X-brace follow-up Thank you to those of you who responded to my x-brace question last weekend. We were able to jack up the center of the x-brace (the x part) just enough to spread the brace and line up the rear holes. Proper hole alignment was much more difficult than the nutserts. Actually, the nutserts were a piece of cake. We made a nutsert insertion tool as described by Don Wentz at http://home.earthlink.net/~rponiarski/xbrace.htm . Thanks Don for the info and thank you Richard P. for a nice website! I realize I am not the first person to install an x-brace (that's an understatement!), but I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone has if they plan on doing one themselves in the near future. I think I learned a lot by doing this myself. On a related note, I read several times that the original straight cross bar should NOT be moved back behind the x-brace as this may not allow for proper engine/trans displacement in a frontal accident. While under the car, I took a long look at this and I just didn't see that happening. The same bar mounted in the original location is perfectly OK, but mounted 2 inches rearward isn't??? I certainly could be wrong on this but..... Any thoughts, opinions, condemnation, accusations, or rants on this one? Last question: I'm going to change my brake pads this weekend. Is it always good to change the brake caliper clips with every install? My E36 Bentley Manual didn't shed any light on this one. You might remember that no amount of bleeding would help, no matter what technique I tried. Turns out, the gentleman who suggested that the clutch pedal box might be broken was, unfortunately, right. The mount for the clutch master cylinder was snapped right in two. Damn. I get the stalling problem fixed, I finally get the thing inspected and legal, and now this happens. I love the car, but this is driving me NUTSO! SO. Now I get to take out the entire assembly and weld it. Has anyone on the list ever removed one of these? I assume that it IS removeable? Bentley's doesn't show anything about the pedal box, much less how to remove it. Brett? Ever done this??? Thanks guys. Any help anyone can give is greatly appreciated. Correct me if I am wrong, but when the ignition is in the start position the car's computer systems spring to life (as they should). With the - -Park Brake Light - -ABS light - -Brake Lining Light - -Brake system fault light. When you start the car, these lights are suppose to go out (except park brake obviously). However mine do not. The Brake lining light, dims, but that is about it. Step on the gas to raise the RPMS > 1.1k approx and they go out as they are suppose to. This problem has been gradually getting worse, and now it does it every time I start the car. Any thoughts on this problem? / experiences / fixes? Cheers. I towed the car there and back, was the pit crew, tire changer, errand boy, gas man etc. and had to listen to him bitch about the ABS going out all the way back home. this past week we did find several gremlins in the car that he is taking care of at the moment. I laughed at him about the abs thing at mid-ohio until it got me at sebring. Nothing like sliding backwards between 2 911 cup cars around 80-90mph. The only thought going thru my head at the time was "damn, as soon as I get thru with the ltw I have to give to robbie and wondered which color 911 he would want since I was going to be buying both after smacking them." but luck would have it, I did a 360 and never stopped, and somehow missing both of them. after the race, 1 911 pilot thought it was his fault for over braking in that corner. I agreed of course. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 21:49:46 -0600 From: "Ray Kang" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] S4 Vs. M3 Although not based on driving an S4 or an M3, but rather on driving my Audi V8 Quattro and M635CSI, I've got to believe the new M3 will be worth the premium. All wheel drive takes some of the fun out of driving, and lower mass coupled with higher horsepower generally translates to better handling. (Hmmm a dealer a mile away from me has two Honda S2000s for sale) Interestingly enough, with my toys (BMW M635CSi, Lotus Esprit SE, Kawasaki ZX-11C) put to sleep for the winter, what I most want to take out for a drive right now is the BMW. Don't get me wrong, BMW's and RWD are great, but I find the '91 200TQ/>'92 S4 to be the best car(s) for the money I have ever driven. IMHO, no other car does _everything_ as well as these. It pulls like a 350ci from 2k rpm and is still singing @ 7k rpm. With some left-foot braking, it goes wherever you point it... fast. And, I must say, it is "the greatest (highway cruiser) of all tiiiiiiiime". My pops has a '91 20v TQ avant that he bought from a dealer buddy 2yrs and 50k miles ago (for $7k). He and I both drive the pee outta that puppy, the only thing that has broken/failed was the driver's door lock. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Carl Buckland just replaced his rather sweet 330iS (hello JVH!) with a previous gen. S4. If I can find a '92 S4 cheap enough for my racing-biased budget, fellow southeastern BMW and PCA DE attendees beware. :) Let me know if you want to try one if you are ever in NC. Here's the lowdown: Car is pretty much a daily driver, roads around town aren't that great, will see some beginner (that's me!) use at some driving schools and autocross, will be using Bilstein sports with whichever springs. Goals: Improve handling without making too much of a sacrifice in daily ride, and also don't want to turn into a snow plow by lowering too much (we get lots of snow). I'm thinking about the ever popular H&R sports and possibly RD springs, but can't seem to find many people with the RD's on their car. Should I take this as a hint that they're not very good? Any and all opinions are welcome from anybody with experience with either of these setups. By the way the RD springs are just plain Racing Dynamic springs (green in color)and not the RD Sport springs. Thanks in advance!
