The reason the "Quota-System" was created was due to the fact that if a
police officer could use his/her discretion on whether or not to issue a
ticket, there would be far less tickets issued. The bureaucrats didn't
like the fact that potential revenue was being lost. Therefore the
"Quota-System" was established. The supposed abolition of the
"Quota-System" was a farce, the method now used to force officers to
write tickets is known as performance appraisals. Just as there are
those in the BMW, Harley-Davidson, etc. that give each a bad name on
occasion the same applies to law enforcement. There are a great deal
more who thought they were entering an occupation that had
professionalism but are now forced to perform merely a technical
function(ticket writing). As with any job that involves a
superior/subordinate relationship there are but two choices, do what
they tell you or find another job. Government at all levels are all
responsible for the revenue generating policies that police have to deal
with and then passed on to the citizens. So make sure that you acquire
the proper target if you decide it is necessary to start shooting.
Preferably at your local shooting range.

LOL Andrew dug a deep 88' M5 hole and is squirming. What's it going to
be...ugly and relatively slow or actually beautiful in their own way? You know,
it IS kind of like the A-10 Warthog. Titanium tub for the pilot, turns when you
push it, real stick and rudder controls, GAU-8 30mm gatling gun with ammo for
10 two seconds burst. And don't forget the Depleted Uranium rounds for those
pesky slow E36 M3 cars that won't give me a point-by! ;-o

BTW, the M5 was the end of the E28 production series. They wanted to tool-up
the line for the next model and yanked the parts over to Motorsport division to
finish with some style. I'm not saying that they used left over parts but I DO
have three different brands of glass in my car! ;-) It was NEVER intended for
mass production either. They made twice as many as they intended for a pretty
low production run (~1300 for U.S.). I will take corrections from the M5
historians.

OK, by now the E36 M3 folks are saying BBOOOOOO, and the old M5 folks are saying
Yeaaaaaa! Relax, I'm just having some fun.

Besides a chip (if available), the next best change is to swap in a
lower ratio differential for better acceleration. You should be able
to upgrade the stock 2.73 or 2.93 (as I recall) 'e' car rear end for
a 3.25 (533i/535), 3.45 (3/87 on 528is auto/85 on 635Csi), or 3.73
(E30 325is). You can also add limited slip if you wish (all for a
price, of course). Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here.

In addition to the points that Chip brought up, I'll add....
Most estimators (or accident reconstructors, if need be) can usually
tell roughly how fast, and in what direction a given car was going at
the point of impact in an accident, by the damage caused. If you were
speeding, own up to it now. You'll prolly still get paid by your insurer
(stupidity and bad judgment ARE covered under most policies). If a lie
is uncovered, it might get you into hot water, and I don't mean the kind
of hot water you get into with your S.O..
As I always tell people, the fact that your body was not totaled is
what's important.
One point not yet put forth is that of the shape of the end of the
guardrail that entered the passenger compartment.
Mind you, I obviously have not seen the car nor the guardrail, but if it
is pointy, then it is reasonable to believe that it could pierce the
sheet metal. However, it it is blunt, curled around, or capped (like
with those yellow "cushions"), then you prolly will have a hard time
convincing anyone that you were only going 35mph. The ice (black, or
otherwise) matters not in this as your speed is not likely to increase
significantly unless you were going downhill when you hit it.

As for the lawyer stuff, why do people immediately seek to sue someone
because they have an accident?
Even if they person you're looking to sue IS liable, why not let them
have at least one chance to rectify the situation before you turn
Dewey,Cheatum &Howe loose on them?
Here's a secret, just between us: If you are talking to someone, whom,
just for the sake of argument, we will call an insurer, product
manufacturer or retailer/servicer, about, oh, lessay...an accident that
you've just had, and you tell them sumthin' like "I'm gonna consult a
lawyer on this..", they are immediately put on the defense, and are jest
a smidge less likely to the result for which you were hoping.
In a situation like this, lawyers are like the underwear that you keep
in the back of the bottom drawer because the elastic has all gone
away--you should use 'em only as a last resort, and when
abso-freakin-lutely necessary.

Subject: [uuc] New To List

Hello,

I"m new to the list. I live in Dallas Texas. I have been keeping up will
all my scheduled maintenances. I'm a bit confused, I had a inspection II
last summer. I went in for a oil change this Monday. I would have thought
during the oil change, they would have reset everything. They didn't, they
left the inspection light on. The guy at the car dealership stated that I
need an inspection I. I would think both inspections are about the same.
Well I had the oil change, and I'm going in on Saturday to have this light
turned off. I would like to be the one that says I will come in for an
inspection if necessary.

I drive a 1994 318i 4 door white BMW, its has 73,400 miles on it, and is
in immaculate condition. I just happen to feel, that the dealership is
taking advantage of me. I just wonder if I need this inspection II this soon
not before a year of having the inspection I. Please forgive me if I have
written to long of a letter.

Best Regards,
    Celisa

True.

Something that the public do not understand about ABS is that they have to
apply firm pressure and keep their foot down. Not pump and modulate. I
don't think the general public are educated enough. I wonder of ABS is
really as useful as it could be.

Hi Gang -

What would your recommendations be for year, make and model for a daily
driver in the $5K to $6K range?

Resale value is important, as I'll need this for only three months.

Also, should I buy this in NC, where the gig will be, and then sell it in
Boston, where I live.

Inquiring mind wants to know -

Dear all:
Part 1: I can't agree more with Rob and Brett regarding unncessesary
ticketing. A cop pulled me over after sitting behing me at a stoplight
for a minute or two. He told me he was pacing me and I was doing 40 in
a 25. This was at night, I wasn't speeding, and the cop was gaining on
me the entire time I saw his lights behind me. My brother-in-law who is
an attorney will come to court with me. He says, "sounds like an
M-badge ticket to me." He advised me to get rid of my fancy BMW club
plates as well. If I had a gun with me when I got pulled over, I'd
probably be in jail now. Anyway, I still can't picture a "dickless
prick" as Brett says. This brings back amusing memories of high school
english class where we studied "the virgin forest, pregnant with natural
wealth... where the hand of man has never set foot."
Part 2: Snow! I bought a set of snow wheels from Tire Rack last month
for my M3 (thinking that this purchase would guarantee that we would get
no snow in Maryland this winter). Well, we've had 2 feet in the last
week and the car is amazing! I have 205/50/16's on all fours with
Michelin Arctic Alpin tires. I put 120 lbs of sand in the trunk for
good luck, and the car is transformed into a snowmobile. I can
accelerate faster in the muck than a Jeep Cherokee. I don't even need
my traction control.

I have 2 e30s a 91 M3 and a 92 325ic M-Tech, both cars have the BMW
Trac-top made by some US company in Conn. BMW and this company have a copy
right so this company cannot sell the BMW one except thru the dealerships.
I got both of mine for $95 including the CCA discount. It was not bad to
install and both my cars are 5 spds and I don't have a problem driving with
the Tractop on the street. I do remove it (slide it out thru the back ) for
track events. On the track, fast shifting could cause your elbow to hit the
padded top. On the street/ highways, the extra comfort of the armrest is
worth its weigh in gold.
